Procházka introduces Alfa platform
THE TOTAL abolition of payroll taxes, installing a single social benefit payment, the financing of basic health care from taxes and a constitutional ban on public finance deficit over a period of a single electoral term are among the measures within the Alfa programme platform presented by Radoslav Procházka, an MP for the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), at the session of the party’s council held in Skalica, Trnava Region, on October 20.

Police Academy employees charged
THE OFFICE for the Fight Against Corruption, a branch of the Slovak police force, has formally charged four employees of the Police Academy in Bratislava with criminal offences. Three people are accused of damaging the financial interests of the European Community, while the fourth suspect is charged with manipulating a public procurement process, the TASR newswire reported.
Lipšic's 'New Majority' formally registers as a political party
Nová Väčšina, or New Majority, a party set up by former Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) vice-chairman and current independent MP Daniel Lipšic this summer was formally registered as a political party at the Interior Ministry on Thursday, October 25, the TASR newswire reported. The new party's inaugural congress, at which the party's statutes, bodies and representatives should be approved, is due to take place in the second half of November.
Cabinet confirms regulatory authority chief in position

Lazar will replace Hatiar as government proxy for Gabčíkovo
The current Slovak government proxy for the construction and operation of the Gabčíkovo - Nagymaros hydro-power project on the Danube River, Peter Hatiar, will be replaced from October 25 by the CEO of the state-run water management company Vodohospodárska Výstavba, Ladislav Lazar. The cabinet approved the reshuffle on Wednesday, October 24, based on a proposal by Transport Minister Ján Pociatek at a cabinet session held on the site of hydro-power plant at Gabčíkovo.
Cabinet to discuss single health insurer plan with social partners first
The Health Ministry wants to discuss its project to create a single public health insurance company in Slovakia with social partners at the Economic and Social Council (HSR) and only then submit its project to the cabinet. According to the schedule drawn up by the ministry, the cabinet should have decided on the project last week. Despite this delay, the Health Ministry has said that the deadlines for the introduction of a unitary system of public health insurance are not at risk.
Bratislava Airport handled close to 800,000 travellers over the summer
Nearly 800,000 people passed through Bratislava's M.R. Štefánik Airport (BTS) during this year's summer season, using 27 regular and 40 charter flight routes to and from the airport, the TASR newswire reported on Thursday, October 25.

Trade unionists from Delphi Slovensko protested on Wednesday, October 24, against the firm’s planned layoff of more than 500 employees, and sought higher severance pay for those affected.
Parliament moves tax-hike bill to its second reading
Tax rises proposed by the Slovak government are one step closer to implementation after parliament on Wednesday, October 24, moved to its second reading the income tax amendment, the SITA newswire reported. If it receives final approval, the measure would come into effect at the beginning of next year. The draft amendment received 81 votes in support from the 142 deputies present, with 60 voting against and one abstaining.
Potential new shareholder in SPP promises not to increase gas prices
The Czech company Energy and Industrial Holding (EPH) has promised Prime Minister Robert Fico that if it becomes a minority shareholder in the Slovak gas utility SPP, it would not try next year to increase gas prices for retail consumers. "They even wrote in a letter to me that they would waive any claims they could have raised against Slovakia in arbitration proceedings based on price regulation," Fico said on Wednesday, October 24, as quoted by the SITA newswire.
Slovakia to participate in Expo 2015, at a cost of €4 million
Slovakia will take part in Expo 2015 in Milan, slated to be held between May 1 and October 31, 2015. The country’s participation will cost almost €4 million, according to a proposal tabled by the Economy Ministry and passed by the government on Wednesday, October 24.
Constitutional Court delivers ruling in general prosecutor case
The president of Slovakia is legally obliged to deal with a parliamentary proposal to appoint a new general prosecutor and, if the candidate was legally elected in accordance with law, either appoint the candidate “within an appropriate timeframe” or inform parliament that he/she refuses to do so and give “relevant reasons”, according to a verdict issued by the Constitutional Court announced on Wednesday, October 24. President Ivan Gašparovič has consistently refused to appoint Jozef Čentéš as general prosecutor since he was elected by MPs on June 17, 2011.

The Slovak media have reported an undercover investigation in Slovakia by Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper which reported that Slovakia's poor monitoring mechanism allowed low-quality health aids to be imported via Slovakia into Europe.
New Hungarian party emerges
A new Hungarian party set to be called the Hungarian Christian Democratic Alliance is forming in Slovakia, the TASR newswire reported on Wednesday, October 24. The foundations of the new party were laid by former director of the Danube Museum Csaba Fehér, János Sárkozi, and other figures at a meeting in the village of Búč in Komárno District earlier this week.

Court rules in general prosecutor case
THE PRESIDENT of Slovakia must “deal with” a proposal of parliament to appoint a new general prosecutor based on the 150th article of the Slovak constitution, and if the candidate was elected in accordance with the law the president must either appoint him/her “within an appropriate time frame” or inform parliament of his refusal. These were among the conclusions included in the latest ruling by Slovakia’s Constitutional Court to form part of the ongoing saga of Jozef Čentéš’ appointment to the top prosecutor’s job.
