Secondary school students will not have to pay a €15 fee to play music at their school-leaving balls following an announcement by Culture Minister Marek Maďarič. He rejected a proposal by the SOZA copyright protection organisation to charge the fee, the Sme daily reported.
President Gašparovič on state visit to Denmark
Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič and his wife Silvia are conducting the first-ever visit by a Slovak head of state to Denmark, at the invitation of Denmark’s Queen Margarethe II and her husband Prince Consort Henrik. The two-day visit will focus on providing a further boost to bilateral economic and trading ties, especially in green technologies, energy efficiency, water and waste treatment, the TASR newswire reported.
Four people from Police Academy in Bratislava charged
The Office for the Fight Against Corruption, part of the police force, has formally charged four employees of the Police Academy in Bratislava with criminal offences. Three people are accused of damaging the financial interests of the European Community, while the fourth suspect is charged with manipulating a public procurement process, the TASR newswire reported.

Greenpeace protests against coal mining in Upper Nitra
Activists from Greenpeace on Monday, October 22, staged a protest against coal mining in Upper Nitra by flying a blimp directly over the area with a banner reading, “If you're reading this, you're breathing pollution from coal”. Greenpeace sought to draw attention to the Slovak government’s support of coal mining in the region with money from the sale of carbon-dioxide emission quotas. The environmentalists called on the government to redirect the money from the sale of emission quotas to projects that would directly help the locals in Upper Nitra instead of financially supporting industrial companies.
