Schindler builds plant in Kostolné Kračany
A new factory for Swiss company Schindler, which produces lifts, is being built in Kostolné Kračany, Trnava Region. When completed it should provide jobs for 280 people, the TASR newswire reported on Tuesday, November 27.
Teachers' unions. government fail to reach agreement
No agreement was reached between striking public school teachers and the government despite four hours of negotiations between union representatives and Prime Minister Robert Fico and other ministers on Tuesday, November 27. The strike by teachers and school employees is thus set to continue, the TASR newswire wrote. The next steps, or potential suspension of the strike, will be decided by the strike committee on Wednesday morning.
Certain aspects of the amendment to the VAT law
Act no. 246/2012 (hereinafter “the Act”) passed on 26th July 2012 amended VAT law no.222/2004 as well as certain other laws, such as Criminal Law, The Commercial Code and Tax Administration Law (Tax Order). The primordial aim of the Act is action against tax fraud; provisions of the Act which serve for this purpose became effective on the 1st October 2012. One of the main tools, the use of which has been extended due to the action against tax fraud, is the liability for tax. This tool has been introduced before, however the Act has now amended article 69 sections 12- 14, as well as adding a new article 69b. The principle of the amendment is that the buyer shall be liable for the tax stated on the invoice, in case the supplier did not pay it or he became unable to pay it and the buyer knew or should / could have known that the tax the tax, or part of it, would not be paid. The legal fiction of the buyer’s knowledge shall be applied in the cases which are stated in the act, such as
State liability for damage caused by public authorities
Slovak business and citizens deal with the public authorities on an almost daily basis. However, sometimes the public authorities by their unlawful decisions and improper official procedure can cause real harm. Despite the superior position of the public authorities, their decision-making and also official procedure in this regard can be subject to punishment. An effective way to prevent the harmful consequences of unlawful decisions and improper official procedure of the public authorities is undoubtedly the possibility to seek damages from the state, on the grounds of the institute of liability for damage caused during the exercise of public authority.
Slovakia has no plans to abandon nuclear power
Slovakia will continue to rely on nuclear energy for the foreseeable future, according to the country’s Economy Minster Tomáš Malatinský. "Slovakia is planning the long-term use of nuclear power in its energy mix, since it significantly contributes to energy security and thus economic independence," said Malatinský at a conference on Monday, November 26, on EU common energy policy and energy security.
Teachers’ strike continues, some schools resume normal schedules
Teachers and school employees continued their nationwide unlimited strike on Tuesday, November 27, to improve funding for education in Slovakia. Most schools remained closed on Tuesday although some of them resumednormal operations.
Tichý disagreed with Trnka’s legal opinion in Glance House case
Ladislav Tichý, the deputy general prosecutor for the elected but not appointed GP Jozef Čentéš, cancelled the consent over the transfer of the Glance House in a disputed case. Thus, Tichý dissented in the case regarding the Bernolákovo apartment house.
President appoints Vážny as Deputy Prime Minister for Investments
President Ivan Gašparovič on Monday appointed governing Smer party MP Ľubomír Vážny to the newly created post of Deputy Prime Minister for Investments.
Kosovo minister will come to Slovakia
For the first time, the Foreign Affairs Minister of Kosovo, Enver Hoxhaj, will come to Slovakia, as invited by the Slovak Atlantic Committee which thus intends to open a debate on the western Balkans. Informally, Hoxhaj will also meet Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák, the Sme daily wrote in its Tuesday, November 27 issue.
ARDAL sells bonds worth €233.84 million
The State Debt and Liquidity Management Agency (ARDAL) accepted bids worth €233.84 million, including €12.1 million from non-residents, at Monday's, November 26, government-bond auction, the TASR newswire was told by Juraj Pekár from ARDAL later on the same day.
Thousands of teachers protest in Bratislava
Around 4,000 school employees filled Trnavské Mýto square in Bratislava on Monday, November 26, as part of the nation-wide teachers strike that began earlier in the day.
Skanska wins bid to build Višňové tunnel
The consortium of construction companies Skanska SK and Strabag has won the public competition over the construction of the stretch of highway between Lietavská Lúčka-Dubná Skala through Višňové, all located in Žilina Region, which is part of the cross-country D1 highway from Bratislava to Košice, the TASR newswire reported on November 23.
Šaľa reports shooting over the weekend
Police are currently investigating an incident in Šaľa that took place on November 24 during which a man described as 47 years old and of Chinese descent, shot 29-year-old Zdenko S. in the leg. Earlier in the day Zdenko S. stabbed the 21-year-old son of the 47-year-old man, who later died in the hospital, the SITA newswire reported.
Čaplovič seeks punishment for Figeľ, Sme writes
Saint Elizabeth’s School of Health and Social Work might lose the right to grant PhDs in the field of social work. This step could follow the review of such titles granted to about 90 graduates, including chair of the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) Ján Figeľ, the Sme daily reported.
Shooter from Zvolen could face life imprisonment
Police have launched a prosecution over the shooting incident in Zvolen, which took place on November 22, and formally charged local resident Ivan H. with murder, spokesperson for the regional police headquarters in Banská Bystrica Jana Vrbická told the TASR newswire.
NBS approves commemorative coin with crosses and halos
The €2 coins which will commemorate the 1,150th anniversary of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Great Moravia, set to be released in 2013, will contain the religious symbols that were originally proposed, the TASR newswire reported on November 23.
Slovak Tree of the Year is a London plane tree, or hybrid plane (Platanus x acerifolia, var. Hispanica) in Komjatice
THE WINNER of the annual popular poll Strom roka / Tree of the Year for 2012 is a London plane-tree from Komjatice in the Nové Zámky district. It is thought to be the thickest tree in Slovakia, with a trunk circumference of 930 centimetres. It received 2,296 votes, Milan Hronec of the Nadácia Ekopolis foundation told the SITA newswire on October 24. On the same day, he gave awards to all the winners. The winner will represent Slovakia in the European Tree of the Year competition, he added.
Cult figure of old Bratislava died 45 years ago
IT IS now 45 years since a unique character well known to the older inhabitants of Bratislava passed away. Ignác Lamár, nicknamed Schone Náci, became an unforgettable figure thanks to his outfit and exceptionally good manners. A life-size statue resembling Lamár, the work of Juraj Meliš, now stands near the Main Square in Bratislava’s old town.
Romathan celebrates 20 years of existence
THE ONLY professional Roma theatre in Slovakia, Romathan, celebrated its 20th anniversary in October. The Košice-based theatre, which mainly performs for schools and institutions, as well as travelling around Slovakia and abroad, commemorated its establishment by staging the play Rómsky holocaust – Svedectvo / Roma Holocaust – The Testimony, written by Milan Godla and directed by Marián Balog. This piece, which premiered back in 2008, shows the fate of Roma in a concentration camp, as based on true stories and testimonies, and also includes documentary movies form concentration camps. However, it also shows the current problem of racism and prejudice in modern society, the Pravda daily wrote.
Failing to convince
OVER the course of a prolonged several-month labour, Slovakia’s right-wing has given birth to multiple children: Alfa, NOVA and the People’s Platform. The parents then dressed their kids in fancy new outfits, such as the Memorandum for Responsible Politics; Strong society, simple state; and New politics: we trust people, with the hope of making them appear more adorable to voters. The problem is that the voters are sceptical and have difficulty believing that these new kids on the block will somehow rock the right wing back to its former strength. Besides, some of these kids are actually just their parents in disguise.
