Schloss Hof now closer for Slovaks
LAST YEAR’S completion of the Freedom Bridge, a pedestrian and bicycle bridge that crosses the Morava River and connects Devínska Nová Ves in Slovakia with Schloss Hof in Austria, has made the latter’s baroque palace complex more accessible to visitors from Slovakia.
Cooperation deepens
BRATISLAVA and Vienna will cooperate more closely in the area of crisis management, particularly in protection against catastrophes, based on a bilateral agreement signed by Bratislava Mayor Milan Ftáčnik and Vienna Mayor Michael Häupl in mid February in Vienna, the TASR newswire reported.
Maria Theresa statue still missing
THE SEARCH on Monday, April 8 for the remnants of a statue of Empress Maria Theresa proved unsuccessful. The results of the underwater archaeology research were presented a day later by Attila Tóth at the Pamiatky /Monuments fair in the Incheba fairground in Bratislava in a lecture called What The Danube Hides.
Hitting renewable energy targets
THE WORLD’S sole nuclear plant to have been completed but never plugged in was built in Austria. The country’s rejection of nuclear power in a national referendum prevented the plant from ever becoming operational. Today it is the site of the country’s biggest photovoltaic park, and has even been used as a filming location, explained Markus Wuketich, the ambassador of Slovakia’s environmentally conscious neighbour, Austria.
SNS ejects Slota from party
JÁN Slota is no longer a member of the Slovak National Party (SNS), after having been stripped of his membership on April 24 due to alleged misuse of party property. The proposal was supported by a two-thirds majority of SNS’ presidium, the TASR newswire reported.

Pravda: Uncertainty over this year's Rainbow Pride march
The Rainbow Pride march for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and intersex (LGBTI) people in Bratislava was supposed to celebrate its fourth anniversary this year but the tradition has ended prematurely, the Pravda daily wrote in its April 25 issue. Organiser Romana Schlesinger confirmed that the Pride march would not take place as planned this year, but did not specify any reason.
Bank analysts forecast economic growth of 0.9 percent in 2013
The economic growth predictions of Slovak bank analysts stabilised in April following months of downward revisions. In the April round of the regular survey by the National Bank of Slovakia, commercial bank analysts said that the Slovak economy would expand by 0.9 percent in 2013 and 3 percent in 2014.
City councillor jailed for corruption
Former Košice city councillor František Olejník was sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of corruption by the Supreme Court on April 25.
Supreme Court dismisses Csatáry's appeal against life sentence
László Csatáry, convicted in absentia of crimes against humanity during WWII, lost his appeal before the Slovak Supreme Court on April 24 and the life sentence delivered by Košice Regional Court in January remains in effect.
Transport Ministry considers leasing Bratislava Airport
Slovakia’s Transport, Construction and Regional Development Ministry is considering leasing Bratislava's M.R. Štefánik Airport (BTS), the Hospodárske Noviny daily reported on April 24, according to information confirmed by the ministry. The ministry will be advised by a consortium, including consultants Deloitte and law firm Sullivan & Worcester, which won a tender worth €890,000.
Sme and Týždeň journalists among 2013 Journalism Award winners
Most of the honours at the 2013 Journalism Awards organised by the Open Society Foundation went to reporters of the Sme daily, Týždeň weekly and TV JOJ private TV channel. The winning journalists were awarded in 14 different categories. The jury considered 618 entries by 380 authors, ranging from articles in newspapers, regional articles and broadcasts to blogs and commentaries. The awards were presented at Bratislava's Danube Cultural Centre (KC Dunaj) on Tuesday, April 23.
SNS MP questions status of meeting at European Parliament to discuss Malinová case
Following reports in the Slovak media that the European Parliament had on April 23 held a public hearing about the Hedviga Žáková (née Malinová) case in Slovakia, Slovak National Party (SNS) MEP Jaroslav Paška, who is also a vice-chair of the right-wing Europe of Freedom and Democracy parliamentary faction, said on April 24 that neither the European Parliament nor any of its official committees had in fact dealt with the Malinová case, the TASR newswire reported.
Teachers to protest in front of parliament on May 7
Teachers and other school employees will demonstrate in front of parliament on May 7, the Trade Union Association of Employees in Education and Science decided on Wednesday, April 24. The protest should take place just as the parliamentary committee on education discusses a report on the state of education in Slovakia prepared by Education Minister Dušan Čaplovič.
Government: Gross debt should peak at 57 percent of GDP in two years
The increase in the level of public-sector debt should come to a halt in 2015, peaking at just below 57 percent of GDP – the level set by a constitutional law on state debt as the maximum deficit before the government is required to submit a balanced state budget.
New rules intended to resolve stalemate at Constitutional Court
The cabinet, meeting on April 24, approved an amendment to the law on the organisation of the Constitutional Court drafted by the Justice Ministry that is intended to resolve the deadlock at the court related to the appointment of a new general prosecutor, the TASR newswire learnt.
Slota dismissed from SNS over misuse of property
Former Slovak National Party (SNS) leader Ján Slota has been ejected from the party he led for over 15 years, SNS press secretary Zuzana Kohútková confirmed on April 24, as reported by the TASR newswire. She said that Slota had been dismissed due to alleged misuse of party property.
Smer appointee to become Public Procurement Office’s new vice-chairman
Andrej Holák, whose departure from the post of Transport Ministry state secretary was proposed by minister Ján Počiatek on Tuesday, April 23, will become vice-chairman of the Public Procurement Office (ÚVO), the government decided on Wednesday.
