Gefco Slovakia gets EC certification

GEFCO Slovakia, a provider of logistics services for various manufacturers, closed its 2011 fiscal year with turnover of €80.8 million, an increase of 4.2 percent compared with 2010, the company said in a press release.

Danube Wings flies within France

DANUBE Wings, based in Slovakia, is gradually launching six routes in France. In mid May it opened a new base at the Dole-Jura airport in the Franche-Comté region with an inaugural flight to Nice. Over the following two months the airline will launch four regular routes from Dole-Jura with two connecting flights, the company stated in a news release.

WHEN Brunella Borzi arrived in Slovakia four years ago she immediately felt younger, as the spirit of this small central European country reminded her of Italy back in the sixties and seventies, when it seemed that everything was achievable if the nation was willing to go for it. Venice to host Slovak-Czech pavilion

FOR THE 13th International Architecture Exhibition Biennale di Venezia that will be held in Venice between August 29 and November 25, an expert jury chose a project entitled ‘Asking Architecture’ to be the joint Slovak-Czech pavilion, one of 29 pavilions from countries around the world. This design, selected from among 30 competing projects, is the work of a group led by Slovak architect Ján Pernecký.

Danube Wings flies to Venice

+SLOVAK air carrier Danube Wings has been flying from Bratislava and Košice to Venice three times a week since April this year. The new route is operated in cooperation with Italian carrier Megaride Air, making use of the support the latter receives from Venice Airport and from the local government and local businesses in the Venice area, the SITA newswire wrote.

Ortona exhibits Slovak bookplates

AN EXHIBITION of bookplates called Slovenský EX LIBRIS opened on May 24 in the Italian town of Ortona. The exhibition was prepared by the Slovak Institute in Rome for Ortona’s Mediterranean Museum and Gallery, Museo Ex Libris Mediterraneo that specialises in bookplates in addition to the other artistic forms.

A CELEBRATION of Italian culture in Slovakia occurs every year during the Dolce Vitaj festival that runs for the entire month of June, but the influence of Italian culture in Slovakia is much wider and can be felt in many more ways – from a good Italian-style coffee through the use of Italian terminology and language in classical music and many operas, to cult movies and Italian architecture and fashion.

Poprad inspired by Italian initiative

POPRAD, a city in the foothills of the High Tatras, is combating the outflow of people from its centre into shopping malls recently built on the outskirts. Seventy shops, restaurants and other facilities, inspired by the Italian Pro Loco scheme, have joined together to create the Pre Mesto (For the City) association to draw people back into the city centre, the Hospodárske Noviny daily wrote in May. The emptying of the city centre has hit almost all facilities there.

Italian firm to supply Honeywell

ITALIAN family firm Travaglini plans to build an industrial unit in the IPZ Záborské industrial park in eastern Slovakia, where it will pack products for Honeywell, a US-based firm. The Italian company plans to buy a hectare of land and construct a unit of about 6,000 square metres. To begin with the firm should employ at least 100 people, the SITA newswire wrote.

Elsa Morante prizes awarded

FOR the third time the Italian Cultural Institute in Bratislava awarded prizes bearing the name of Elsa Morante, an Italian writer, in late November 2011. The institute grants three prizes, one of which goes to an Italian film director, another to a Slovak film director, and the last to a translator of Italian literature into Slovak, the TASR newswire wrote.

Catholic news agency opens branch

THE ITALIAN Roman Catholic news agency SIR Europa opened a branch in the Slovak capital in September last year. It covers events related to the Roman Catholic Church and spiritual life in central and eastern Europe, the SITA newswire reported, citing the Bishops’ Conference of Slovakia.
