From tennis courts to galleries
CZECHOSLOVAK tennis legend Jan Kukal has begun the new year very actively, but in the field of art, not sport.During the recent International Travel Fair at the large Incheba exhibition hall in Bratislava, he opened a new gallery - Art Gallery of Incheba Bratislava. Its first exhibition, which consists of two parts - Homage to Pablo Picasso and Returns - offers over a hundred paintings and forty sculptures created by Slovak and Czech artists. Other exhibits scheduled to take place there by the end of this year are in the preparation phase (see box at the end of this page).

Martinské Hole
MARTINSKÉ Hole, known to locals as Martinky, is a diamond in the rough. It features well-groomed slopes, small crowds, and tremendous natural beauty, but lots of pull lifts (Pomas) and no snowmaking. The only recent investments in the resort consist of two new Pomas and a terrain park for snowboarders, which was scheduled to open on January 31.
Changes expected later
SLOVAKIA can expect amendments to its accounting standards in several years, but immediate changes after the country's accession to the European Union are unlikely. The reason is that changes made to Slovak accounting legislation in the last 18 months were largely designed to narrow the gap between Slovak accounting legislation and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
