Tsunami resonates locally

JOINING 50 countries around the world, Slovaks observed three minutes of silence January 5 to honour tens of thousands left dead by an earthquake and tsunami that devastated Asia just one day after Christmas. Slovaks are wondering what else they and their country can do in terms of relief efforts.The earthquake struck near the Indonesian island of Sumatra causing tsunami waves to crash onto islands and coastal resorts in Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Deputy minister resigns over spy past

AFTER weeks of media pressure, a deputy construction minister, Ján Hurný, handed in his resignation over allegations that he was an active agent of the former communist secret service (ŠtB).Hurný, nominated to the post by PM Mikuláš Dzurinda's Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), announced his decision to the Prime Minister January 3. Dzurinda accepted the abdication without further comment.

Artistic winds of change

THIS is the story of six well-regarded Bulgarian artists and the man who brought their work to Bratislava.That man's name is Ivan Maslarski. A printer by trade, he grew dissatisfied with the limitations of the work and set out to express his own point of view about art and those he considers to be great artists.
