Košice premieres two ballets
THE KOŠICE State Theatre premieres Carl Orff's Carmina Burana and Igor Stravinskij's The Rite of Spring on January 21 in an arrangement by Ondrej Šoth.For Šoth it is the fifth time he has worked on Carmina Burana.
Tisovec
THE GEMER region was a major iron-ore mining and processing centre during the Austro-Hungarian empire. This picture is of Tisovec, in the Rimavská valley, one of the mining and ironworking areas of the region, taken at the beginning of the 20th century.Today, people come to Tisovec to admire its beautiful environs, but in the past prospectors searched the valley for gold and silver nuggets washed up by the river Rimava.

Enel's pen poised
AFTER initial hurdles, the privatization of Slovakia's major power utility seems on track. Italian company Enel has agreed to the wording of the contract that will give it a 66-percent stake in Slovenské elektrárne.Once Enel signs the transaction documents, the first stage of the privatization process will be wrapped up.
Bilateral partnership pays off
LONGSTANDING cooperation between a Norwegian and Slovak company has resulted in an economic success story. With about 20 percent of its capital in the hands of Norway's HydroAluminium, Slovak aluminium producer Slovalco has been able to reach an annual turnover of Sk10 billion (€260 million).Located in Žiar nad Hronom in central Slovakia, Slovalco's success is a boon to the region's economy, and now, thanks to environmentally friendly technology, no longer a threat to the environment.
Wheels of time keep on turning
IT is rare to find a working wheelwright nowadays, but the workshop of master craftsman Karol Smrek, of Ľubovňa, is a hive of activity, revealing its own incessant buzz.He takes a piece of wood, marks it carefully with a pencil and places it in a machine. The small plank is gradually turned into an arc. Some more precisely judged turns and, as in days of yore, a brand new wooden wheel is revealed.
