WHEN it comes to electronic music, Western Europe has always held on to the global spotlight. Across Eastern Europe, on the other hand, musicians have had a hard time getting the world's attention, almost as hard a time as they have had achieving success at home.
Court delays cost millions
SLOVAKIA's judges think the Justice Ministry should increase their number in order to tackle ongoing court delays.Slovakia loses millions of crowns per year due to court delays. According to data released recently by the Constitutional Court, the court has already adjudicated some Sk6 million (€150,000) this year in compensations for delays.
Day to celebrate cultural heritage
THE INTERNATIONAL Council of Museums declared May 18 to be the Day of Museums and Slovakia is playing a full part. The celebration seeks to make people more aware of the role museums and galleries play in preserving cultural heritage.
War rages for best new management talent
According to human resources (HR) consulting firms, companies in the West, including Slovakia, will feel a shortage of talented managers in the near future.A recent survey found that half the companies in the Fortune 500 list will lose 50 percent of their management in six to 10 years. Only 25 percent of these firms are confident of replacing those lost. HR experts therefore stress the need to plan ahead.

Painting back in the spotlight
THE YEARS following the 1968 Soviet invasion "normalized" painting to such an extent that few showed enthusiasm for the art form after the 1989 Velvet Revolution overthrew the regime. But in the third millennium painting is once again gaining attention after being overshadowed by new art forms in the 1990s.
Trading pain for gain
A CONUNDRUM faces bureaucrats interested in raising the salaries of Slovaks to match those of Western European countries. While higher wages would raise the standard of living of Slovaks and thus support local economic growth, they would also result in an exodus of foreign direct investment.
Court finds deputy guilty of bribery
FOR THE FIRST time in Slovakia's history, a member of parliament was sentenced to jail on a bribery charge. On May 9, the Banská Bystrica district court found Gabriel Karlin guilty of accepting a Sk500,000 (€12,950) bribe.
