THE BURDEN of proof no longer rests solely on the state. Citizens suspected of obtaining their property illegally must be able to prove otherwise or risk losing it, thanks to a new law passed in parliament June 23.
Smiths come to Kežmarok
SWORDSMEN storming the gates of the historical town of Kežmarok annually signal the opening of the large European Folk Craft festival. The festival offers displays of almost forgotten traditional crafts, each year giving attention to a particular type of skill. From July 8 to 10 this year, the focus is on iron-processing crafts.

Little country hunts for big business
ECONOMY Minister Pavol Rusko has very specific goals for Slovakia's economy as well as a vision of how he wants the country perceived. Attracting foreign investors, says Rusko, should be the country's number one priority. Only then can the country lessen its regional disparities, raise the purchasing power of the population and orient itself towards becoming a knowledge-based economy.
Coalition locks horns over SPP
TENSIONS between two coalition partners might result in delays in unbundling Slovakia's natural gas grid operator, Slovenský plynárenský priemysel (SPP). Unbundling the state-owned monopoly is a necessary step in complying with European Union liberalization laws to open the market to outside competition.
