Artmedia loses opener
ARTMEDIA Petržalka may not have covered itself in glory in its home opener in the Champion's League group round - a 1-0 loss to Inter Milan - but they played well enough to keep it close and to earn a sincere round of applause from the sellout crowd of 30,000 at Bratislava's Tehelné Pole stadium. The September 13 game represented the first time any Slovak club had qualified for the main round of the annual football tournament of top European teams. Artmedia, a rank outsider, beat out Glasgow Celtic and Partizan Belgrade earlier in the summer to advance.
Slovakia - an illusionary home?
MANY Slovaks have travelled far from their homeland in search of a better life. These emigrants left not so much for themselves as for their children. In strange lands they had to start from scratch, seek help from locals and at the same time question their attitudes.A new Slovak documentary film, My zdes, or Here We Are, which entered cinemas on September 14 (with an English edition competing at international festivals), shifts this perspective.
Nitra takes the stage
THIRTEEN foreign and Slovak professional theatres will stage plays in Nitra from September 23 to 28. For the first time in its history, the International Theatre Festival Divadelná Nitra will provide all performances with English interpretations.
Politics and bad partings
THE EVENTS leading up to the current cabinet crisis put Ľubomír Lintner in the media spotlight. Lintner, a deputy chairman of the New Citizen's Alliance (ANO), wanted ANO Chairman Pavol Rusko to voluntarily resign as economy minister over alleged conflicts of interest. When Rusko refused, nine ANO MPs led by Lintner turned against the party leader and formed their own rebel faction.Pledging support to the current Mikuláš Dzurinda's cabinet, Lintner signed an agreement on September 12 with the remaining three coalition partners - the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union, the Hungarian Coalition Party, and the Christian Democrats.
