A commission is being created to protect consumers against unacceptable contracts, the Justice Ministry stated on its website, www.justice.sk, on October 6.

Election of Supreme Court President postponed indefinitely
THE JUDICIAL Council has indefinitely postponed the election of the Supreme Court President planned for September 30. Its stated reason for doing so was that it had not received a report from a representative of the Supreme Audit Office on how the Supreme Court spent Sk17 million (€564,297) allocated to it in 2007, the SITA newswire wrote.
Social values show change
A NEW European Values Study presented by the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) on September 24 found that Slovaks place the highest value on family and work.
Paul Newman’s roots were in Humenné
PAUL Newman, the legendary American actor who died on September 26, was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, but his mother – whose birth name was Terézia Fecková – was born in the Slovak town of Humenné. The actor’s grandmother is buried there and some of his relatives still live there, the Pravda daily wrote.

Education is the most -frequently provided employee benefit
EMPLOYERS motivate their employees to perform better in several ways. One is to provide benefits.Since August 2007, more than 135,000 users have taken part in an internet poll about wages conducted by Merces.sk, part of Profesia. The poll looked at 14 of the most common benefits which employers offer employees. The responses suggest that the most frequently provided benefit is education for employees, while the least common benefit is a contribution to health insurance. One third of the respondents did not list any benefit.

Volunteers from abroad save monuments in Slovakia
THIS YEAR, foreign volunteers helped renew and save monuments such as Bojnice Castle, the Veľký Šariš and Čierny Hrad ruins, and the calvaries in Bratislava and Banská Štiavnica. From June to September, there were 15 international camps in Slovakia in which 129 young people from all over the world participated, the SITA newswire wrote.
Prague Energy Exchange trades in electricity for Slovakia
THE PRAGUE Energy Exchange (PXE) commenced trading in electricity for Slovakia on October 1. PXE Secretary General David Kučera said that most of the important Slovak electricity traders will participate in the exchange, and he anticipates their active involvement.
