Tragic accident claims 12 lives; national day of mourning announced (updated)

In one of the worst traffic accidents in Slovakia’s history, a collision of a bus with a train near the village of Polomka in central Slovakia claimed 12 lives. A passenger train with two carriages crashed into a bus which was carrying 37 skiers from Bánovce nad Bebravou to the ski resort Bučník at about 9:00 am on Saturday, February 21.

EC approves first assistance for Slovakia's D1 highway section

The European Commission (EC) has green-lighted Slovakia's first application for a non-refundable contribution from the European Union’s Cohesion Fund for €263,473. The money is to be used to co-finance the construction of the D1 highway section between Sverepec and Vrtižer, Transport Minister Ľubomír Vážny said on February 19, the SITA newswire wrote.

Central Election Commission interprets the Slovak Constitution

A candidate who receives an absolute majority of valid votes from all eligible voters can become president in the first election round. Slovakia’s Central Election Commission agreed on this interpretation of the Constitution at its first meeting after its members were sworn in.
