Slovakia confirms second case of swine flu
Out of twelve people suspected of having contracted the A (H1N1) novelty flu, also known also as swine flu, the virus has not been confirmed in seven cases.
Slovak household gas and electricity prices could fall
The price of natural gas for households in Slovakia may fall beginning in September, while electricity prices may follow suit next year, the TASR newswire wrote on May 29. The fall in gas prices would be caused by current price declines on global markets.
Harabin now has opposition for top job at Supreme Court
Slovak Justice Minister Štefan Harabin is no longer the only candidate for the post of Supreme Court chairman in the June elections, sources from the Supreme Court confirmed for TASR on Thursday, May 28. A proposal for another candidate - Eva Babiaková, signed by thirty judges - was submitted to the Judicial Council. May 28 was the deadline for the submission of proposals. Until now, Harabin was the only candidate for this post. The previous vote was scheduled for September 30, 2008 but it was adjourned indefinitely until a review – initiated by the Judicial Council – of financial conduct at the Court.
Justice Minister Harabin challenges polls on Special Court
Public opinion polls carried out about the preservation of Slovakia’s Special Court are anything but a reflection of the real situation in society, which was demonstrated by the “negligible attendance” recorded at two public protests organised by opposition parties on Wednesday, May 27, said Justice Minister Štefan Harabin (HZDS) on May 28 to the TASR newswire. According to a poll carried out by the Polis agency, as many as 58.9 percent of the respondents were disturbed by the Constitutional Court's ruling last week that the Special Court is unconstitutional. Only 23.5 percent of those questioned weren't concerned about this issue.
SDKÚ asks PM Fico to disclose contract between JAVYS and ČEZ
The opposition SDKÚ party has called on Prime Minister Robert Fico to disclose the contract between Slovakia’s Nuclear Decommissioning Company (JAVYS) and Czech energy firm ČEZ on the establishment of a joint venture to build a new nuclear power plant at Jaslovské Bohunice, the TASR newswire reported.

Economy Minister Ľubomír Jahnátek lobbied in Brussels on May 27 for Slovakia’s bid to locate the headquarters of the Agency for Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) in the country.
