MPs left guessing after SIS director remains silent over leak
The director of Slovakia's SIS intelligence service, Jozef Magala, did not explain to parliament's SIS Oversight Committee details of an alleged leak of a list of names and telephone numbers of senior members of the SIS to the media.
Ryanair to start flights between Bratislava and Sardinia in June
Irish low-cost air carrier Ryanair will extend the range of destinations it serves from Bratislava Airport at the end of June when it starts flights to Sardinia, the SITA newswire reported on March 23.
Heat and sound insulation plant to be built in Senica
SK-TEX plans to erect a plant manufacturing heat and sound insulation in Senica. The investor plans to invest over €3 million in the project. According to the investment intention that the investor has sent for Environment Impact Assessment (EIA), the plant should create 22 jobs, the SITA newswire reported.
Smer uses cartoons in political fight
While Prime Minister Robert Fico is suing daily Sme over a cartoon, his Smer party is using cartoons in its political fight, the Sme daily reported.

PSA Peugeot Citroen to suspend car production for 13 days
PSA Peugeot Citroen, one of the three major carmakers with factories in Slovakia, will halt production at its Trnava plant for 13 days during the next three months, the Sme daily has reported. The news comes despite the Trnava factory having increased production by 10 percent during the last year.
Interior minister: most of the petrol-stealing claims are lies
Around 80 percent of the information stated in a criminal complaint filed by Jozef Žaťko, a former employee of the Office for Protection of Public Officials, has proved to be untrue and the remaining 20 percent will be examined, Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák (Smer) said on Monday, March 22.
Emissions quotas money traced back to Slovakia
Evidence has emerged of a link between the sale of Slovakia's national CO2 emissions quotas and a Belize-based business whose representatives have addresses in Slovakia. The sale has aroused controversy because of the low price at which the quotas were sold and the obscure origins of the US-registered company, Interblue Group LLC, which was the official buyer.
Volkswagen to put up salaries by 3 percent
German carmaker Volkswagen's Slovak unit and the KOVO metal-working union at the factory in Bratislava have concluded collective bargaining for 2010 by reaching an agreement to increase employees' salaries by 3 percent with effect from May 1, 2010, the company's spokesperson said on March 22. In addition, each employee will be paid €215 in a settlement for April. The new salary rates will be effective until March 31, 2011.

President Ivan Gašparovič on Friday, March 19, returned the Patriotism Act drawn up by the Slovak National Party (SNS) to parliament.
US Embassy: too early to say if Obama will sign treaty in Bratislava
Press attaché of the US Embassy in Bratislava Chase Beamer said on Friday, March 19, that it is too early to say whether US President Barack Obama will join his Russian counterpart Dmitri Medvedev in the Slovak capital to sign a new START arms reduction treaty.
EC proposes not to reimburse money spent on social companies
Auditors from the European Commission have suggested that none of the money spent on Slovakia's so-called social companies will be reimbursed from EU funds, according to a draft report based on an audit of the companies they conducted in December last year.
New airlines emerge in Slovakia
After the failure of airlines Seagle Air, SkyEurope and Air Slovakia, four new companies have filed applications for operating licences, Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson Petra Pastyriková has told the Sme daily.
Poll shows KDH ahead of SDKÚ
THE RULING Smer party would have won 38 percent of the votes if elections had been held in mid-March, according to the results of a telephone survey carried out by the Polis agency between March 13 and 16 on a sample of 1,280 respondents, the SITA newswire wrote. The next most popular party was the opposition Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), with 13.4 percent; the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) in third place, with 12.7 percent.
Inflation at historic low
SLOVAKIA’S HARMONISED inflation rate remained at a historic low in February, the SITA newswire wrote. Consumer prices measured by the European Union’s harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP) dropped 0.2 percent year-on-year in February, the same decline as in January.
Ottoman fortress saved?
THE CIVIC association Fundament intends to reconstruct the ruins of the most northerly castle in the former Ottoman Empire in part of Rimavská Sobota named Sobôtka and create an archaeological park. Currently, the vicinity of the 16th century Ottoman fortress is thickly overgrown with grass and waste has been illegally dumped at the site. Fundament has rented the land from the town for a symbolic price of one Slovak crown.
Best-selling cars brands in Slovakia, 2009
In total, 90,426 cars were sold in Slovakia in 2009, 6.68 percent fewer than in the record year of 2008. The sales figures for new passenger cars and small utility vehicles in 2009 was as follows:

FOREIGN diplomats are continuing publicly to monitor disciplinary proceedings against judges critical of Supreme Court President Štefan Harabin. British Ambassador Michael Roberts and representatives of the embassies of the USA, Canada, Norway and Austria attended a hearing against Supreme Court Justice Jozef Kandera on March 17, the Sme daily reported.
