PSA Peugeot Citroen to suspend car production for 13 days

Evidence has emerged of a link between the sale of Slovakia's national CO2 emissions quotas and a Belize-based business whose representatives have addresses in Slovakia. The sale has aroused controversy because of the low price at which the quotas were sold and the obscure origins of the US-registered company, Interblue Group LLC, which was the official buyer.

Volkswagen to put up salaries by 3 percent

German carmaker Volkswagen's Slovak unit and the KOVO metal-working union at the factory in Bratislava have concluded collective bargaining for 2010 by reaching an agreement to increase employees' salaries by 3 percent with effect from May 1, 2010, the company's spokesperson said on March 22. In addition, each employee will be paid €215 in a settlement for April. The new salary rates will be effective until March 31, 2011.

Poll shows KDH ahead of SDKÚ

THE RULING Smer party would have won 38 percent of the votes if elections had been held in mid-March, according to the results of a telephone survey carried out by the Polis agency between March 13 and 16 on a sample of 1,280 respondents, the SITA newswire wrote. The next most popular party was the opposition Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), with 13.4 percent; the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) in third place, with 12.7 percent.

Inflation at historic low

SLOVAKIA’S HARMONISED inflation rate remained at a historic low in February, the SITA newswire wrote. Consumer prices measured by the European Union’s harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP) dropped 0.2 percent year-on-year in February, the same decline as in January.

Ottoman fortress saved?

THE CIVIC association Fundament intends to reconstruct the ruins of the most northerly castle in the former Ottoman Empire in part of Rimavská Sobota named Sobôtka and create an archaeological park. Currently, the vicinity of the 16th century Ottoman fortress is thickly overgrown with grass and waste has been illegally dumped at the site. Fundament has rented the land from the town for a symbolic price of one Slovak crown.
