Retail sales in March grew for the first time since December 2008
Retail sales in Slovakia in March grew for the first time since December 2008. According to data from the Slovak Statistics Office, retail sales in the third month were 0.2 percent higher than in the same period a year ago and reached €1.376 billion, the SITA newswire wrote.
Chinese carmaker in talks with Slovakia about investment
Another foreign-owned carmaker is looking to invest in Slovakia. Chinese company JAC Motors declared an interest in building a factory in the country during the ongoing EXPO Shanghai 2010 exhibition in China. JAC Motors regional director David Wang confirmed that he is in talks with Slovak officials about terms and conditions.

THE ANTITRUST Office of the Slovak Republic has ordered the German firm Scholz AG to pay a fine of €5,100 and the Czech company Heim Trade a fine of €550. The two companies disregarded the deadlines set by law in the acquisition of Scholz Holding GmbH, the SITA newswire reported.
New factory in Vráble industrial park to offer 700 new jobs
THE US-based company ICU Medical operating in the Vráble industrial park will soon offer new jobs. The company’s plant, which will make medical equipment, has already undergone final commissioning. ICU Medical will create 700 jobs in a three-year period, the SITA newswire reported.

Germany plans to help the country through its state development bank rather than with public funds. A majority of German citizens would not help Greece, arguing that the country has lied about the economic results. The French are more willing to help.
Sme reports tender to evaluate Labour Ministry projects was mishandled
The Slovak Labour Ministry announced a tender to find a contractor to evaluate the projects of the ministry that were financed from EU funds. The tender lasted for only three days and not all those who registered at the ministry’s website hoping to participate in the tender were informed, the Sme daily wrote.

Former Czech astronaut addresses Communist May Day rally in Zvolen
Around 200 people, thought to be mostly curious about the first Czechoslovak astronaut Vladimír Remek, gathered at a Communist May Day rally in Zvolen in Banská Bystrica region on Saturday, May 1. Japanese firm plans to close its Prievidza plant; 1,200 to lose jobs
The Japanese firm Yazaki Slovakia, producer of wire systems for the automotive industry, said it will shut down its production plant in Prievidza and lay off its 1,200 employees. The company's consultant Adam Tkáč confirmed this information for the SITA newswire on April 30.
Slovak ice hockey team defeats Latvia in preparation for World Championship
Thanks to a turnaround at the very end of the game in Skalica on Sunday, May 2, the Slovak national ice hockey team beat Latvia 4-3 in preparation for the 2010 World Championship in Germany, the TASR newswire wrote.
Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Lajčák discusses range of topics in Washington DC
Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak, who visited the United States at the end of last week, wrapped up his talks in Washington with representatives of the US administration and several members of Congress, the TASR newswire was told by Lajčák's spokesman Peter Stano on April 30. During his meeting with the members of congress, Lajčák discussed Slovak-American relations and a range of foreign-policy and security issues. As part of his programme in the US capital, Lajčák gave a lecture at Johns Hopkins University entitled “Central and Eastern Europe 20 Years after the Fall of Communism”. In his lecture, which was attended by around 100 people, the minister focused on transformation and integration processes that countries of the region have had to undergo, highlighting this as a key element in building today’s united Europe and focusing on Slovakia's “success story” in particular. When meeting Lajčák, Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg and Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Gordon highly praised the development of the bilateral dialogue between Slovakia and the United States, in which the two have confirmed their interest in further deepening strategic relations at all levels.
