Foreign demand provides fuel for Slovakia's economic engine
ECONOMIC sections of newspapers will continue disappointing readers who seek stories about a definitive end to the economic crisis, a sudden jump in employment, or more responsible fiscal policies by governments. However, the latest figures on Slovakia’s economic growth do provide some degree of compensation: GDP grew in the first quarter of 2010 by 4.8 percent, Slovakia’s Statistics Office reported, rounding up its May flash estimate by 0.2 percentage points. The country’s gross domestic product reached €15.072 billion and market watchers say that it is mostly foreign demand that has been pouring fuel into Slovakia’s economic engine.

Marching for tolerance
POLITICIANS were not the only ones campaigning hard as the general election approached. Civic organisations and activists also found the pre-election period to be an excellent opportunity to raise their voices and be heard. One example was cartoonist Martin “Shooty” Šútovec who raised enough money in a public appeal to put up billboards across Slovakia featuring his anti-government cartoons. The Tolerance March is another example.

SLOVAKIA’S moment of truth about the condition of its state finances will arrive only after the parliamentary elections. Right wing prevails; HZDS out
ROBERT Fico’s Smer party won by far the highest number of votes in Slovakia’s parliamentary elections on Saturday, June 12. But there were no wild celebrations at the party’s headquarters on election night because the other results mean Fico may well find he is unable to secure coalition partners to form the next government. He will not be able to rely on the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), whose support fell below 5 percent, meaning it will not be represented in the new parliament. The Slovak National Party (SNS), Smer’s other coalition partner in the outgoing parliament, cleared the threshold by a whisker, according to preliminary results announced after all the votes had been counted. It will get another four years in parliament after gaining 5.07 percent of the national vote.

However, the overall election result has given hope to the centre-right parties that they, and not Robert Fico’s Smer, will be able to form the next government.
