Grave of anonymous political prisoner unveiled in Leopoldov
An event commemorating the victims from the ranks of political prisoners, with Roman Catholic archbishop of Trnava Róbert Bezák blessing a symbolical grave of an unknown political prisoner persecuted by the Communist regime, took place at the former prison cemetery in Leopoldov in Trnava Region on Saturday, August 21, the TASr newswire reported. The symbolic grave has been unveiled in authentic form, as Communists used to bury political prisoners – without a name and cross, featuring only a peg with the number of the prisoner. The national commemorative event, which was attended by several dozen people, was organised by the Confederation of Political Prisoners and the General Directorate of the Prisoner and Justice Guard Corps, TASR wrote.

Former Hungarian president Sólyom visits Slovakia one year after being denied entry
Former Hungarian president László Sólyom kept the promise he made to residents of Komárno on August 21, 2009 when he was not allowed to enter Slovakia to attend the unveiling of the Hungarian King Stephen I statue, based on a decision of former prime minister Robert Fico’s government, the TASR newswire reported.

Slovakia's Peter Gelle won a sensational silver medal at the Men's K-1 500 metres Sprint race at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Poznan, Poland on Sunday, August 22, the TASR newswire wrote.
Friendly football match between police and Roma team ends in 8-3 score
The Bratislava I Police District Directorate defeated a Roma team by a score of 8-3 in a friendly match that took place under the auspices of Bratislava Region president Pavol Frešo at the Budatínska Primary School on Saturday, August 21, the TASR newswire reported. The police, wearing yellow-green jerseys, won the first half decidedly 7-1. The Roma in red-black colours of the Integrasa civic association improved in the second half, which they won 2-1. The match, which was played on artificial grass, was heavily influenced by hot weather and the players' fitness (or lack thereof).

RECONSTRUCTION work at Bratislava’s Old Town Hall has been interrupted, delaying the return of the Museum of the City of Bratislava (MMB) to the building and the opening of a permanent exhibition on the capital’s history.
Austria and Slovakia are linked by strong business ties
THE TIMES when the border between Slovakia and Austria was completely sealed off and heavily guarded and when only very few Slovaks with special permission could peer beyond the Iron Curtain ended more than 20 years ago. Now, with both countries holding membership in the European Union and the Schengen zone, those wishing to travel between the neighbouring countries only need to carry an ID card.
Austrian artists on show in Bratislava
IN JUNE twelve artists active in constructive or conceptual art presented their works at an exhibition called Nähre ferne/Closeness and Distance in the gallery of the Slovak Union of Visual Arts in Bratislava. The exhibition, prepared under the baton of curator Peter Lindner, presented works by artists who all, except one, live or lived in Austria, the TASR newswire wrote.
'Erecting the statue was a power-driven act'
IT IS NOT unusual for historical figures and heroes from mythical tales to be used in contemporary political battles. Slovakia proved that point very well when former Prime Minister Robert Fico, shortly before the June 2010 general election, ceremonially unveiled a statue of Svätopluk, a pre-medieval regional ruler, in the courtyard of Bratislava Castle, thereby turning the past ruler and his bronze likeness into a subject of not only political discussion. The politicians of the current government are talking about relocating the statue and have asked for advice from a commission of experts on history and arts.
Bratislava tourist centre in Vienna
VIENNA Mayor Michael Häupl and his Bratislava counterpart Andrej Ďurkovský ceremonially opened a new port named Vienna City on the Danube channel in the centre of Vienna in mid July. A new Bratislava information centre called Gate to Bratislava is part of the port, which is also the Vienna station for the Twin City Liner boat service that links the two capitals via the Danube River, the TASR newswire wrote.
Construction production in Slovakia grows slower than in the rest of Europe
SEASONALLY adjusted construction production of Slovak construction companies increased month-on-month by 1.3 percent in June, while in the rest of European Union it increased by 3.5 percent.
Vyhne spa – built by miners
VYHNE spa in the Štiavnické vrchy hills is among the many Slovak spas that have disappeared over the centuries. Hot springs were accidentally discovered here during the mining of iron ore. When digging a road at the foot of a hill, the miners struck the springs. The first two pools and spa buildings were built by the local miners.
Roma Feast at Červený Kameň for Wild Poppies
DIVÉ MAKY, or Wild Poppies, a project which seeks out and nurtures talented Roma children culminated on Saturday, August 14, with a Cigánsky Bašavel, or Gipsy Feast, at Červený Kameň Castle not far from Bratislava. The Divé Maky project includes a year-round system of tutors who oversee participants’ school results, training and lessons, but also involves intensive workshops several times a year.

FOR ONLY a bit longer than a week, Bratislava fans of architecture and design had an opportunity to view an exhibition about Josef Hoffmann, a central European architect and designer born in what is now the Czech Republic who lived most of his life in Vienna.
Canadian film shot in Modra to premiere soon at festivals
CANADIAN author, writer and director Ingrid Veninger, who has Slovak roots, released her first feature film about a girl who visits her relatives in the old family homeland at age 17. The movie is autobiographical to a large extent, and as Veninger has said, narrates the story from the viewpoint of someone in the delicate time between childhood and adulthood. The film is called Modra and it was filmed in the small Slovak town of Modra, near Bratislava, with many of Veninger’s actual relatives playing her fictional relatives.
Business conditions are below average
THE BIGGEST obstacles to running a business in Slovakia are still bribery, bad execution of laws, legislative instability and high taxes. General satisfaction with business conditions in the country shifted from slightly above-average in 2006 to below-average over the last four years. Half of businesses and managers in Slovakia assess the situation negatively, even though the majority were content in 2006, the TASR newswire reported.
