Inflation ticks up
Year-on-year inflation in Slovakia rose for the fourth month in a row, reaching 4.6 percent in November 2011. Consumer prices went up by 4.4 percent year-on-year, the SITA newswire reported.
Orange and Slovak Telekom pay for frequency licences but may go to court
Mobile phone operators Orange Slovensko and Slovak Telekom have made their one-off payments to extend their mobile communication licences for ten more years, Roman Vavro, the spokesman for Slovakia’s Telecommunications Office (TO), told the TASR newswire.
Police chief Spišiak will receive a bonus as Interior Minister pardons his discipline
Disciplinary action taken against Police President Jaroslav Spišiak because of his speeding violation has been pardoned by Interior Minister Daniel Lipšic and Spišiak will receive a bonus of €3,500 for the second half of 2011, Ľubomíra Miklovičová of the Interior Ministry's press department told the TASR newswire on December 12. According to the Act on Police State Service, a disciplinary action elapses after a year but if a police officer deserves a pardon, it can be granted by his or her superior, in this case by Interior Minister Lipšic.
ECHR rules on suit by Roman woman that she was sterilised without informed consent
A Slovak woman of Roma origin who sought compensation before the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) for alleged forced sterilisation by a public hospital in Prešov eleven years ago was supported by the court. The court ruled in her favour on November 8, finding violation of her right to protection against inhuman and humiliating treatment and of her right to protect her private and family life and awarded her financial compensation, the SITA newswire reported.
Climatologist says Slovak climate may become more like the Balkans
As a result of global climate changes, Slovakia's climate may become more similar to that of the Balkan countries in years to come, climatologist Pavel Faško told a press conference on December 12, as reported by the TASR newswire. "One manifestation will definitely be that there'll be more heat waves," said Faško, who works at the Slovak Hydro-Meteorological Institute (SHMÚ), as quoted by TASR.
Volkswagen to make large investment in Bratislava plant
The Bratislava-based factory of German carmaker Volkswagen plans to enhance its welding capacities with an investment worth €1.1 billion, the e.trend portal wrote.
Ordinary People's slate to be headed by physicist Martin Mojžiš
The Ordinary People and Independent Personalities party will be headed by physicist and Týždeň weekly journalist Martin Mojžiš at the top of its slate, followed by the head of the Slovak National Theatre drama section, Štefan Bučko, and university professor and paediatrician Eva Horváthová in third position, the TASR newswire reported. The chairman of the Ordinary People party, Igor Matovič, said the first five candidates on his party’s slate have a total of 14 university degrees, which is the highest number among all party slates published thus far.
Slovak government states it is fulfilling its commitment to doctors
The Slovak government press department released a statement on December 12 saying that it is fulfilling the obligations stemming from a memorandum it signed with protesting doctors that led to their return to their state-run hospitals, the TASR newswire reported. The Government Office stated that it considers the statement made by the doctors’ union, LOZ, indicating that Prime Minister Iveta Radičová has lost trustworthiness as inappropriate.
Slovakia receives credentials from two new ambassadors
Sweden's new Ambassador to Slovakia, Nils Daag who is based in Vienna, presented his credentials to President Ivan Gašparovič on December 12 and said after the ceremony that he wants to contribute to boosting economic and trade cooperation between the two countries, the TASR newswire reported.

26 political parties file slates for March general election
Altogether 26 political parties filed candidate slates with Slovakia’s Ministry of Interior before midnight December 11. The Central Electoral Commission (ÚVK) will now check all applications and decide on the final list of political parties that will field candidates in the March 10 parliamentary elections before December 31, the TASR newswire reported.
Doctors declare strike alert after government okays legislative changes
The Slovak government passed the measures prepared by parliament’s health committee to ensure the rise in doctors’ salaries and to amend the Labour Code on December 12 but the doctors’ trade union rejected the changes prepared by the government as incomplete and again declared a strike alert.
New industrial orders up by 4.1 percent year-on-year in October
The annual growth of new orders in industry decreased in October as in August and September new orders rose by 11 percent year-on-year and in October it was only 4.1 percent, an amount of €3.424 billion, the SITA newswire reported on December 12.
Prime Minister says Slovakia satisfied with the results of EU summit
The crucial summit held in Brussels on December 9 did not turn out according to the wishes of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicholas Sarkozy as only 23 countries of the European Union, including Slovakia, agreed on establishment of a so-called fiscal union. The United Kingdom strongly rejected the changes and other member states asked for more time to make a final decision, the Sme daily wrote on December 10.

EU money for OPIS unblocked
SLOVAKIA will not now lose out on approximately €24 million from European Union structural funds after the European Commission decided to unblock the money, which was originally allocated for the Operational Programme for the Informatisation of Society (OPIS), the TASR newswire reported on December 1.
