Počiatek could assume responsibility for bridge collapse
If the investigation of the collapse of the highway bridge near the villages of Kurimany and Iliašovce shows that the Transport Ministry could have prevented the accident, but failed to perform its duties, minister Ján Počiatek will take the responsibility. He said so during the political talk show Sobotné dialógy broadcast by the Slovak Radio (SRo).
Opposition to discuss the state of judiciary at special session
Representatives of the opposition parties united within the People’s Platform want to summon a special parliamentary session to discuss the current state of the Slovak judiciary. The three parties, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) and Most-Híd plan to speak about the deteriorating trust in the Slovak judiciary and come up with measures to reverse this development, the TASR newswire reported on November 9.
Foreign trade surplus increased in September
The foreign trade balance was in surplus in September, according to the data presented by the Statistics Office on November 9. The surplus reached €346.7 million, while in August it stood at €41.8 million. The cumulative nine month surplus increased to €2.592 billion, what is by €2.077 billion more than last year, the SITA newswire wrote.
Protest in Bratislava ended with EU-flag burning
The second protest march under the slogan ‘Together for a Decent and Safe Life in Slovakia’ organised by Oskar Dobrovodský and Marián Mišún, ended in front of the Bratislava Castle gates with one protester burning the flag of the European Union. Mišún, along with another protester, could face a three-year prison sentence for this act, the TASR newswire reported.

War dead remembered in ceremony at military cemetery in Petržalka
ALL SOULS’ Day was commemorated one day early, on November 1, at the World War I military cemetery in the Petržalka borough of Bratislava. The Petržalka Beautification Society organised a solemn event at the Petržalka-Kopčany cemetery to remember the 331 soldiers who are buried there. The schedule of the event, which began at 14:00 included laying a memorial wreath on the central cross and the performance of the C and k. (i.e. Austro-Hungarian Empire’s) brass chamber orchestra, which was dressed symbolically in uniforms of the Austrian army in the First World War.
Slovakia responds to US election results
PRESIDENTIAL elections in the United States are one of those rare occasions when the media in Slovakia invites a wide range of Slovak politicians and pundits to comment on the choice the American people are making about their future leader and how this choice might affect Slovak-American relations. While Slovaks differed in their preferences for the best candidate to take the White House, they agreed that no major change was expected in relations between the United States and Slovakia in the event of victory by either candidate.
More clarity on call charges
THOSE using audiotext services may be told in advance how much they will be charged to call an audiotext service telephone number. The Slovak Parliament on November 6 advanced a draft revision to the law on electronic communications, introducing the duty. The revision was elaborated by the Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO) party, the TASR newswire reported.

THE CENTRE of avalanche prevention at the Mountain Rescue Service based in Demänovská Dolina is preparing a mobile application to distribute its daily reports about the avalanche situation in Slovakia. The application should be ready for the upcoming winter season, the TASR newswire reported in late October.
MPs reject same-sex partnerships
PARLIAMENT has rejected a proposal to introduce same-sex registered partnerships, put forward by the opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party. The draft was backed by only 14 MPs. Although SaS has 11 seats in parliament, it became clear during the vote that only six of its MPs had backed the proposed legislation, the TASR newswire reported.
Bridge collapse prompts political blame game
FOUR deaths and 12 injuries resulted from the collapse of a highway bridge under construction between Kurimany and Iliašovce, both located in Levoča district, on November 2. Initial findings by investigators suggested that the tragedy had been caused by a weak support frame, the Sme daily reported on November 5.
Slovaks on tour take mobile pictures
ROUGHLY 21 percent of Slovaks used mobile phones to photograph their summer holidays this year. Last year it was 19 percent. This was one result of an online survey that polling agency NMS Market Research conducted on a sample of 1,200 respondents in cooperation with the price-comparison website Heureka.sk.
Košice ECOC 2013 gets app
KOŠICE, Slovakia’s second city, will become a European Capital of Culture (ECOC) next year. Košice-based software company NESS KDC, one of the founding members of the Koalícia 2013+ grouping launched to support the Košice – ECOC 2013 project, has developed a mobile application enabling users to get updates about events organised as part of the project. Along with information about events it can navigate visitors to the places where they are taking place.

THE SLOVAK cabinet adopted an allocation scheme governing emissions allowances, but left open the question of how the proceeds earned by auctioning greenhouse gas emissions quotas will be spent, raising concerns that instead of going toward environmental protection they may instead be used to patch holes in the state budget.
New Slovak classical music
ON SUNDAY, November 11 the Nová slovenská hudba / New Slovak Music festival, celebrating new classical music by Slovak composers, started in Bratislava. The 26th year of this biennial event continues until November 16, offering more than 50 works by contemporary classical composers.“This marathon of contemporary music is not just a show of the works of modern composers of all generations, but also a show of current Slovak symphonic and chambers ensembles, choirs, groupings and individual musicians,” Martina Tolstová of the Slovak Philharmonic said, as quoted by the SITA newswire.

IN THE Tei-Park Museum in Tokyo, the Postal Museum of Slovak Post (Slovenská pošta) will present the artistic designs of Slovak stamps, featuring national folklore and Christmas motifs, among others, the TASR newswire wrote.
Slovakia prepares new bond issue
SLOVAKIA is preparing for a new issue of bonds, authorities confirmed on November 7 following unofficial information that emerged over the previous days. The government’s Debt and Liquidity Management Agency (ARDAL) reported that it entrusted three banks with managing the bond issue, the SITA newswire reported.
