Petržalka shooter faces up to ten years in jail
Police charged a man, 51, identified only as Jozef, with inflicting bodily harm on Wednesday, November 14, after he began shooting at two dogs in Bratislava and their owner.

U.S. Steel might leave
ONE of the flagship United States investments in Slovakia has considered offers for its acquisition that are interesting enough to explore. Though the steelmaker U.S. Steel Košice (USSK), located in eastern Slovakia, has confirmed that there have been talks over its potential sale, it remains tight-lipped about the identity of any potential buyers. The information on the potential departure of U.S. Steel Corporation from Slovakia, which acquired Slovakia’s main steelworks back in 2000, prompted speculation in the local media over who might purchase it, with one of the named players in the industry already denying interest.
OECD: Slovakia’s economy should approach France’s by 2060
The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development issued a long-term prognosis that compares the GDP per citizen in its member states. The Hospodárske noviny daily quoted the prognosis on Wednesday, November 14, as saying that Slovakia should start gradually catching up with western countries as soon as this year.
Damaged highway bridge in eastern Slovakia held up during explosion
A team of specialists on Tuesday, November 13, attempted to blast off the part of the bridge under construction between the villages of Iliašovce and Kurimany (Prešov region) that was damaged after a section of it collapsed on November 2.
London Court postpones verdict in Boórová case
An appeals court in London on Tuesday, November 13, postponed until Friday (November 16) its final verdict in the case of Slovak citizen Ivana Boórová whose two children were placed into foster care two years ago by British authorities, the Slovak Labour Ministry's press department confirmed for the TASR newswire.
Poll: Smer would win election, New Majority would garner 3.2 percent
If the general election took place in November, Smer would win by a wide margin, a poll by the Polis Slovakia agency found. Smer would get 43.1 percent of the vote (and 82 chairs), followed by the right-wing Ordinary People and Independent Personalities with 8 percent and 15 chairs. The SITA newswire quoted a poll made by Polis for the TA3 news TV channel between November 2 and 12 with 1,410 respondents.
Smer vows to block parliamentary session to discuss judiciary problems
The ruling Smer party will not back a programme including a special parliamentary session where the opposition parties wanted to discuss the diminishing trustworthiness of the Slovak judiciary, the TASR newswire reported.

Construction companies will compensate bridge collapse victims’ families
The construction companies involved in the works at the collapsed bridge near the villages of Kurimany and Iliašovce, both in Prešov Region, will compensate the families of victims of the tragedy, which took place on November 2. The representatives of the Váhostav – SK and Bögl & Krýsl firms promised that every month until the end of the investigation they will pay an amount equal to the salaries of the four workers who died in the accident, the SITA newswire wrote.
Slovakia sterilised Roma women without their consent, ECHR rules
The European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) has issued a third verdict in favour of Roma woman who sued Slovakia for forced sterilisation. The court also granted the plaintiffs compensation of €28,500 and €27,000, as well as court fees, the SITA newswire reported.
Foreign Minister Lajčák visits Vatican this week
Slovak Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Miroslav Lajčák is visiting the Holy See on Tuesday and Wednesday, Novmeber 13 and 14. In Vatican, he will meet with Pope Benedict XVI, the Foreign Ministry informed the SITA newswire.

The Slovak government plans to save money by freezing the salaries of state representatives; this proposal has met with resistance from judges, the Hospodárske noviny daily wrote in its Tuesday, November 13, issue.
PPS Group dismisses 180 people, may rehire them later
Engineering company PPS Group Detva (Banská Bystrica region) confirmed on Monday, November 12, that it is to lay off 180 employees at the end of this year. The company has a total of 1,500 employees, of which 1,180 have work contracts directly with the company.
Statistics Office: Consumer prices up 3.8 percent year-on-year in October
Consumer prices in Slovakia rose by 3.8 percent year-on-year in October, with core inflation reaching 3.2 percent and net inflation amounting to 2.6 percent, according to data released by the Statistics Office (ŠÚ) on Monday, November 12.

U.S. Steel Košice considering withdrawal from Slovakia
On Monday, November 12, the management of the Košice-based iron-works U.S. Steel (USSK) officially admitted for the first time that the US investor is considering leaving Slovakia. In a statement letter to employees, the company writes that it has already received an offer to be bought out of the Slovak factory. The statement does not reveal who would be the potential buyer, the Sme daily wrote in its Tuesday issue. The parent company, United States Steel Corporation, has received several offers to purchase the steelworks in Košice.
