Dominika Uhríková joined The Slovak Spectator as a freelancer in 2007. In 2008, she joined the team part time and was assigned the Countrywide Events column. She covers culture and writes for the publishing house `s special publications.From May 2005 to April 2007, Ms. Uhríková worked part time for Radio Lumen. She also freelances for Teleplus, a national bi-weekly. Ms. Uhríková is studying translation and interpretation at the English and Italian departments of Comenius University’s School of Philosophy. She also studies French and culture at Prešov University’s School of Philosophy.

Western SLOVAKIA Bratislava FESITVAL: SUSTAINABILITY, energy, design, creativity and corporate responsibility will be among the topics of the upcoming festival titled Re:Made in Holland that will be held in Bratislava between May 16 and 23. This interesting event, organised by the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Slovakia, aims to familiarise the Slovak public with the values of the Dutch people and will feature, for example, a benefit bike tour, a traditional Dutch market as well as several film screenings and exhibitions. A quest for beauty

HIS FIRST sculpture was made from wood and was named Plum Wood Song. After the events of 1968, abstract works were deemed by the regime not to be “convenient”, so he had to start making portraits. Today, his busts of famous Slovaks can be found all around the country and he enjoys considerable prestige as one of the most renowned figures of the local arts scene.

Western SLOVAKIA Bratislava FESTIVAL: THEATRE halls throughout Bratislava will be hosting performances by both local and foreign ensembles as part of the New Drama festival that will take place between May 11 and 16. Its fifth edition will feature a wide range of plays of different genres as well as several interesting accompanying events. These include, for example, a joint exhibition by Slovak scenographer Juraj Fábry and his Serbian colleague Miodrag Tabački, and a lecture titled New Writing in British Theatre Today given by Aleks Sierz, a British theatre critic and reviewer and one of the most outstanding contemporary drama theoreticians. Western SLOVAKIA Bratislava EXHIBITION: 'PHENOMENAL' is how curators describe Czech artist Josef Čapek, whose works are on show at the Mirbach Palace of the Bratislava City Gallery at Františkánske Square 11 under the title Secrets of Images. The famous painter, illustrator, graphic designer, caricaturist and writer, who died in a concentration camp at the end of the WWII, is said to have loved Slovakia, the country that inspired most of his 1930s symbolist landscapes. These, together with some of Čapek’s Cubist paintings, arrive in the Bratislava for the first time in 28 years. Western SLOVAKIA Bratislava SHOW: IT SEEMS that many would like to keep their childhood dreams. This is one possible explanation for why Disney’s shows are so popular in Slovakia that they usually sell out long before their arrival in the country. This time the famous characters, that have amused audiences in various forms for more than eighty years, present a series of performances taking place at Bratislava’s Incheba Expo Arena at Viedenská cesta 3-7 between April 30 and May 3, starting at various times. Mickey’s Magic Show features charming numbers by professional illusionists that will deceive even the most sceptical adults. Tickets cost between €23 and €35. Western SLOVAKIA Bratislava FESTIVAL: FOR THE FIRST time ever, Bratislava will host the annual meeting of the International Network for Contemporary Performing Arts (IETM), which should be attended by around 500 theatre festival organisers, producers and artists. In parallel, the Slovak Theatre and Dance Festival will be offering performances in various Bratislava theatres. The organisers have chosen 25 plays of different genres to present foreign guests with “the most interesting works that have been produced in Slovakia in recent years”. AFTER LAST year’s success, the British International School will again host Ruth Van Reken, co-author of the publication “Third Culture Kids: The Experience of Growing Up Among Worlds” and co-founder of the Families in Global Transition international network. The writer will visit Bratislava to talk “nationally and internationally about the benefits and pitfalls of living as an expatriate,” the organisers state.

“FRENCH and something in addition,” runs the motto of the Alliance Française de Košice (AFK), one of the four Slovak branches of the well-known worldwide network. Right now it is exactly the “something in addition” that can be enjoyed in the cinemas, museums and concert halls of the easternmetropolis, for they are hosting the 10th jubilee edition of French Culture Days.

Western SLOVAKIA Bratislava MUSICAL: AS MANY as six shows in five days will be performed in Bratislava within the Mamma Mia! international tour from April 15 to 19. This “smash hit musical”, as the promoters call it, features 22 hits of the legendary group ABBA, such as Chiquitita, Dancing Queen and I Have a Dream. The touching story authored by Catherine Johnson and unforgettable lyrics and melodies by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus have attracted around 32 million viewers since the premiere in 1999. Today, 11 versions of Mamma Mia! are being performed throughout the world. The venue is Incheba Expo Arena at Viedenská cesta 3-7 and tickets cost between €39 and €55. BURYING your valuables is perhaps, in times of the omnipresent global financial crisis, a good idea, unless you forget where on earth you hid them. Whether this was the case of the man who in the 17th century, during an invasion of Košice, hid a copper casket with 2,920 gold coins, three medals and a 214-cm-long gold chain in the ground, or whether his fate was more tragic, will probably never be known.

This is what organisers promise those who attend the Gypsy Night to be held at Bratislava’s Pasienky Sports Hall at Trnavská 29 on April 8 (International Roma Day), starting at 19:00. The “megaconcert”, as it is called, will feature the famous Gypsy Devils orchestra as well as a number of renowned musicians from other ensembles. Spectators will moreover have a unique opportunity to see Harri Stojka, an outstanding Austrian gypsy jazz performer who lives in the US, Antonín Gondolan, who has co-operated, for example, with the Czech legend Karel Gott, or Buffó Rigó Sándor, concertmaster of the 100-member Budapest Gypsy Orchestra. Western SLOVAKIABratislavaMARATHON:THE CITY of Bratislava for the fourth time will host the popular Bratislava Marathon. Hundreds of runners are expected to fill the streets of the city centre and surrounding areas for a series of runs from March 27 to 29. A number of accompanying free events have been prepared by the organisers, including concerts by Dominika Mirgová, Martina Schindlerová and Gladiator, as well as different workshops and competitions for children. Western SLOVAKIA Bratislava EXHIBITION: WORKS BY Patrik Illo, an outstanding glass designer, are on show at Bratislava’s Slovak Design Centre until April 8. The award-winning artist, known for his ability to find beauty in pleasantly simple forms and details, has cooperated with the famous Lednické Rovne glassworks and also with various companies in Poland and the Czech Republic. All visitors to the display will be entered into a draw to win an original set of glassware. The rich programme features Mojo & Banda, The Old School Band, Canned Heat Revival, Zuzana Suchánková & Band and many others. Dirty Fred, a Slovak-Hungarian formation including Hubert Tubbs (pictured above), a famed American singer who has cooperated with such stars as Santana and the Rolling Stones, is the highlight of the event.
