A worthy Baby

CLINT Eastwood has long been linked with cinematic violence. He has certainly made different types of movies - the twilight romance of The Bridges of Madison County and the Burt Reynolds-aping action comedy of Every Which Way But Loose - but many of us will always think of him as the punk-killing cop of Dirty Harry and the silent, stone-faced vigilante of Sergio Leone's westerns.

Slovak's hardest lesson

THE MORE Slovak I learn, the worse I feel. At least, that is how it seems on a tough day. Such was the case a few nights ago when, my mind heavy with a drink or two and a deluge of half-understood conversation with Slovak friends, I found myself on the street, shouting to them "nerozumiem všetko, a nikdy nebudem rozumiet všetko!" - "I don't understand everything and I'll never understand everything!" - to which one friend replied "No, konečne!" - "Finally!"

Hronský Beňadik

FOR more than a 1000 years, the Benedictine monastery in Hronský Beňadik has stood where the river Hron leaves the mountains. The massive monastery complex earned its money from its huge estates, as well as from tolls from rafts travelling down the Hron.

Look, but please don't touch

EVEN though it may sound strange, Bratislava's notorious "concrete jungle" - Petržalka - is home to some virtually untouched national treasures. One of them - Starý Háj - is situated just behind the Communist-era paneláky apartment blocks.
