Fico: I won't use newly-introduced right to respond in media
Prime Minister Robert Fico doesn't intend to make use of the 'right to respond' that has recently been introduced by a new Press Act approved by the Cabinet, it was reported on January 9. According to Fico, he can have his say at press conferences or on other occasions. According to him, nobody should get the feeling that the Government will respond to something every other or every day. However, "ministers will indeed be able to respond individually."
Fico: Choice of advisor in SPP's privatization illegal
Speaking at a news conference in Bratislava on January 9, Slovak PM Robert Fico said that the choice of privatization advisor eight years ago for Slovak gas utility SPP was in contradiction with the law. According to Fico, the current Government has discovered that unaccounted-for expenses amounting to more than Sk227 million (€6.7 million) were paid out.
Two investors to begin operating this year in Hlohovec
The industrial zone in the town of Hlohovec (Trnava region), also known as Hlohovec-Horná Sihoť, will be expanded by two more operations later this year, the local council said on January 9. In the first half of the year, South Korean company JMT will begin assembling circuit boards at its first European plant, which it began building in autumn last year. The company, which plans to create 400 new jobs, will supply compatriot firm Samsung, which is manufacturing LCD flat-panel televisions near Trnava.
Court to rule on extradition of terrorist suspect on January 22
The Supreme Court is scheduled to decide on the extradition of alleged terrorist Mustapha Labsi to his native Algeria on January 22, Peter Preti from the Supreme Court President's office told the SITA newswire.
Ministry releases list of six applicants for first PPP highway tender
The Ministry of Transportation has published a list of six applicants who expressed interest in participating in a tender to construct and operate five stretches of the D1 highway between Žilina and Prešov, as part of the first package of public-private partnership projects.

Interior Ministry compromises with NGOs
Members of the Government Committee for NGOs and Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák on January 8 agreed to a compromise pertaining to the ministry's legislative proposal on the right to assembly. The ministry won't withdraw the proposal, but also won't submit it until it is discussed with representatives of the NGOs.
Economy Ministry presents report on state of business environment
The business environment in Slovakia in recent years has undergone major changes, with a favourable impact on entrepreneurship, reads an Economy Ministry report entitled Report on the State of the Business Environment in Slovakia, which was published on January 8.
Gašparovič greets religious leaders at New Year meeting
Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič and his wife Silvia on January 8 greeted the country's religious leaders at the traditional New Year's meeting, wishing their organizations success in their activities throughout the year. The President praised Catholic, Protestant and Jewish clergy for their contribution to the development of Slovakia in cultural, spiritual and other respects, noting the self-sacrificing attitude of their predecessors in difficult times in the nation's history.
SNS executive expresses preliminary support for Gašparovič
A memorial plaque commemorating the 15th anniversary of the creation of the Slovak Republic was unveiled on Tuesday in Cerhov (Košice region). The ceremony was initiated by the Slovak National Party (SNS) and the Cerhov municipality as part of the combined SNS executive, ministerial caucus and MPs' caucus session.
Christian Democrats oppose rush to ratify Lisbon Treaty
The opposition Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) is the only party in parliament so far that has voiced objections to ratifying the EU Reform Treaty (also known as the Lisbon Treaty). According to the party, prior to the ratification, Prime Minister Robert Fico and Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška should present its text to the public and only then ask parliament for its approval. The KDH deputy chairman for foreign affairs, Martin Fronc, said this in response to statements by senior representatives that they want to push through the adoption of the treaty as early as at the parliamentary session in January.
Two expelled bidders can continue in electronic toll tender
Slovak-Swiss consortium ToSy.sk, headed by the Slovak firm Elektrovod Holding, and SanToll and Ibertax, a group headed by the French firm Thales, can continue in the tender for a supplier of a complex electronic toll collection service in Slovakia.

On January 8, the Sme daily printed a front-page article about the Agriculture Ministry, led by Zdenka Kramplová, who was nominated by the People's Party - Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (LS-HZDS).
Trnka wants to eliminate election deposit for parties
On January 8, the Pravda daily wrote that Prosecutor General Dobroslav Trnka has filed a motion with the Constitutional Court that asks it to eliminate the Sk500,000 deposit a candidate or party must make before it can run for office.
Analysts: Record high growth in 2007 won't be matched this year
The Slovak economy grew at a record-high rate last year, but analysts are expecting a moderate slowdown in 2008, it was reported on January 7. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased in the first three quarters of 2007 by 9 percent overall, growing from 8.3 in the first quarter to 9.4 percent in the third, noted ČSOB bank analyst Marek Gábriš.

The prices of both petrol and diesel will increase by 40 hellers (a € cent) per litre as of Tuesday, the 'natankuj.sk' website informed on January 7.
Slovakia to send relief to earthquake-hit Kyrgyzstan
Slovakia is sending humanitarian aid - tents and heating equipment - to earthquake-hit Kyrgyzstan in response to a request from the European Union, the Interior Ministry said on January 7. Other countries pledging assistance to the Central Asian country are fellow EU-member states including Sweden, Italy, Austria and Germany, along with the United Nations.
SDKÚ to resubmit no-confidence motion on PM
The opposition SDKÚ-DS party said on January 7 that it intends to file a new parliamentary no-confidence vote on PM Robert Fico over allegedly suspicious land deals.
Čaplovič: Roma are EU citizens and cannot request political asylum
The members of Roma nationality in Slovakia are citizens of the European Union, so it's not possible for them to apply for political asylum in other EU-member countries, Slovak Deputy Prime Minister for Knowledge-Based Society, European Affairs, Human Rights and Minorities Dušan Čaplovič said in Bratislava on January 7 following his meeting with the representatives of Belgium's Immigration Office.
