Representatives of the International Press Institute (IPI) condemned the latest sharp statements by Prime Minister Robert Fico who slammed journalists and accused them of a conspiracy against his party and the government. Slovakia’s vice premier discusses cyclotron centre with Russian ambassador
Preparations for a visit of Russian President Dmitrij Medvedev, co-operation in science and research, completion of the Cyclotron Centre and other projects of mutual interest were discussed by Slovak vice pemier Dušan Čaplovič and Russian Ambassador to Slovakia Alexander Ivanovic Udaltzov on December 17, the TASR newswire reported. Čaplovič said that both the cyclotron and proton centres being built in Ružomberok can become a basis for centres of excellence for joint Slovak-Russian scientific research. Čaplovič and Udaltzov also discussed the protection and maintenance of Russian military graves in Slovakia and agreed that the graves represent a historical monument that holds a joint message about the past of both countries. Number of Slovaks receiving unemployment benefits drops further in November
The number of Slovaks eligible to receive unemployment benefits dropped in November for the third straight month. Sociálna Poisťovňa, Slovakia’s social security provider, paid out unemployment assistance to over 50,200 people in November, a drop of 6,100 persons compared to October, the TASR newswire reported.
Vietnam’s president is visiting Slovakia
The president of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Nguyen Minh Triet, began a three-day visit to Slovakia on December 16. A series of intergovernmental co-operation agreements is expected to be signed between the countries during Triet's official visit. Vietnamese delegates include public officials as well as entrepreneurs who will meet with their Slovak counterparts at an economic forum planned to take place at the Bôrik Hotel in Bratislava, the TASR newswire wrote. On December 17, the Vietnamese head of state will meet for talks with Slovakia’s most senior officials: President Ivan Gašparovič, Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška and Prime Minister Robert Fico at a working lunch.

Year-on-year inflation measured by EU-harmonised methodology stood at zero in November 2009, the Statistics Office said on Wednesday, December 16. Prices grew by 0.3 percent month-on-month in November. EU-harmonised inflation went into negative figures for the first time in Slovakia in October, standing at -0.1 percent, the TASR wrote.
Court receives proposal to terminate SkyEurope bankruptcy proceedings
