Slovak National Party (SNS) chairman Ján Slota said on February 16 that the departure of MP Anton Korba from the SNS parliamentary caucus is “no big loss” for the party, the TASR newswire reported.

Greenpeace sues Environment Ministry over nuclear power plant
Greenpeace Slovensko, an environmental NGO, is suing the Slovak Environment Ministry over what it calls a violation of rules in completion of the third and fourth units of the nuclear power plant in Mochovce. Greenpeace has raised objections claiming bias by the company that was chosen to elaborate an expert opinion on the completion of the power plants required for an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), the SITA newswire reported.

Slovakia and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have signed a bilateral agreement under which Slovakia will provide the IMF with a loan amounting up to €440 million, the TASR newswire wrote on February 15. The agreement, signed by the governor of Slovakia’s central bank (NBS), Jozef Makúch, and the IMF’s managing director, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, became effective on February 12.

Kuzmina wins first Olympic gold for Slovakia in women's biathlon
A Slovak woman of Russian origin, Anastasia Kuzmina, won the gold medal in the women's biathlon 7.5-km sprint at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics on February 13, the Sme daily wrote. On the 7.5 kilometre-long trail in Whistler, Kuzmina beat German biathlete Magdalena Neuner, who crossed the finish line 1.5 seconds later than the 25-year-old Slovak. Marie Dorin from France came in third, 10.9 seconds later than Kuzmina.
