Most Slovaks say they won’t pay to access internet sites
MOST internet users in Slovakia wouldn’t use internet sites if they were require to pay to access them, according to a late-June opinion poll carried out by Mediaresearch on 519 respondents, the TASR newswire wrote.
Economic crisis sends Slovaks home
THE NUMBER of Slovaks working abroad continued to decrease last year. The economic crisis was identified as being behind the trend, which was examined in a report on migration by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The OECD scrutinised inflow of immigrants and outflow of emigrants for 31 OECD member countries, the SITA newswire wrote.
Bartenders Mix It Up
On Saturday, June 19, elite barmen and barmaids from Slovakia and the Czech Republic met for the 10th annual international Hubert Cup 2010 bartenders’ competition. The mixed beverage throw-down took place in the Park Inn Hotel in downtown Bratislava. The event, organised by the Slovak Barmen’s Association and Hubert, J.E., a producer of Slovak sparkling and still wines.
Russian pilot dies at Prievidza glider meet
A Russian contestant was killed on Thursday, July 8 at the world gliding championship in Prievidza. Alexander Martynov was killed when his glider crashed during a competition event director Jozef Šnirc informed the SITA newswire.
The Oskar Čepan award 2010 goes to Anna Daučíková
The Foundation – The Centre of Contemporary Art has announced the winner of its 15th annual award for a young artist under 35. An international jury – comprising Anna Daučíková, head of the Studio of Video and Multi-media Creation at the Academy of Fine Arts; Sharon Kivland, a writer and visual artist from the UK; Alexandra Kusá, temporary head of the Slovak National Gallery; Lucia Tkáčová, expert assistant of the “IN” Studio; and Marek Pokorný, Czech reviewer, curator and head of the Moravian Gallery in Brno – decided that out of the four artists who made it into the final round (Petra Feriancová, Štefan Papčo, Pavla Sceranková, and Jaroslav Varga), the established Slovak artist Petra Feriancová would receive the award.
Tender to sell used railway cars is cancelled
TRANSPORT Minister Ján Figeľ has ordered a review of all current tenders and bidding procedures underway by state-supported organisations that are under the ministry’s control. He also issued a ban on adoption of new decisions other than those that are vital for continued operation of these organisations and fulfilment of set tasks, stated the ministry’s spokesman, Martin Krajčovič.
Benefit concert for young cancer patients organised in Košice
A benefit exhibition to support the project Marrow for Children’s Oncology took place on Saturday, June 19, in the Town Hall in Hviezdoslavova Street in Košice. The event, called On the Wings of Hope, presented the work of successful young artists – all friends and former patients of the Department of Children’s Oncology, the TASR newswire wrote.
Incoming finance minister warns deficit target will not be met
Say goodbye to the dream of a 5.5-percent public finance deficit this year: that is one of the first clear public messages from Slovakia’s new finance minister, Ivan Mikloš, who has returned to the job after a four-year gap. Mikloš was in part responding to comments made last week by his predecessor, Ján Počiatek, who left office saying that the 5.5-percent deficit target he had set is realistic provided the new government “practice what they preach”.

THE NORTH Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) needs Slovakia’s support in the development of US missile defence shield, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said following his first meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radičová in Brussels on July 13, the SITA newswire reported.
Slovak government backs eurozone stability plan
AFTER much prodding from the European Union and a lengthy domestic game of blame, the government of Iveta Radičová has nodded to Slovakia’s participation in the European Financial Stabilisation Facility (EFSF). The government’s July 15 ‘yes’ must now be approved by the country’s 150-member parliament, in which the ruling coalition holds a narrow majority, and then be signed by Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič.
White-tiger cub is baptised in Bratislava zoo
A white tiger cub was baptised with the name Shini Aya at Bratislava Zoo on Saturday, June 19. The female cub was born on April 18. Her mother Shilang, 5, and father Achilles, 8, are the parents of two other white tigers (Surya and Samir) born at the same zoo in 2008.

According to the most recent Institute for Public Affairs (IVO) Barometer survey released Thursday, July 15 the quality of Slovakia's democracy in key areas of public life remained unchanged in the second quarter of 2010 when compared to the first, the TASR newswire wrote.
Slovak government approves participation in EFSF but rejects loan funds for Greece
The Slovak government at an extraordinary session on Thursday, July 15, agreed that it will sign the agreement on the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), the TASR newswire reported but Slovakia's participation is still subject to ratification in parliament and the signature of President Ivan Gasparovic. At the same time, the government refused to provide any funds for the EU loan made to Greece. The government recommended that parliament should not pass partial agreements necessary for Slovakia to grant funds to Greece. The original agreement on the loan to Greece was signed by the former cabinet of Robert Fico in May 2010.

The new Slovak government wants to review major contracts signed by the previous cabinet said Prime Minister Iveta Radičová at a news conference on Thursday, July 15, the TASR newswire reported.
EC welcomes Slovakia’s decision to sign EFSF but wants further discussion on Greece
The European Commission on Thursday, July 15 welcomed the decision of the Slovak government to sign the framework agreement on launching the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), but the Commission said it wants to discuss the recommendation given by government to parliament not to support loan funds to Greece, the TASR newswire wrote. “The European Commission welcomes the statement by Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radičová on signing the EFSF framework agreement. Concerning other aspects, including financial assistance to Greece, we'll continue together with other EU institutions in discussions with Slovakia,” said EC spokesperson Amelia Torres, as quoted by TASR.
Slovak government seeks to curb parliamentary immunity
Immunity from prosecution for MPs should be limited to voting and statements made in parliament, according to a constitutional law proposal and Criminal Code amendment drawn up by Prime Minister Iveta Radičová of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) and approved by the government at its extraordinary session on July 15, the TASR newswire reported.
Slovakia’s new health minister plans to disclose all contracts
Health Minister Ivan Uhliarik (KDH) announced that during the month of August he will look into the operation and management of institutions belonging to the health department, including university and faculty hospitals, the TASR newswire wrote.
Finance Minister Mikloš says planned deficit of 5.5 percent of GDP is an illusion
Slovakia is unlikely to reach its planned deficit of 5.5 percent of GDP in 2010, with the new Finance Minister, Ivan Mikloš, saying that “the projected deficit is a mere illusion”, the TASR was told on Wednesday, July 14. Speaking after a government session, Mikloš questioned statements made by former finance minister Ján Počiatek regarding the feasibility of keeping to the original goal. Mikloš said the plan cannot be reached especially because collected taxes and payroll deductions are €1 billion lower than estimates made when the budget for this year was being drafted.
Labour minister says director of Sociálna Poisťovňa should resign from post
Dušan Muňko, the general director of the state-run social insurer Sociálna Poisťovňa (SP), who was put in his position by Smer party, should resign from the post if he now wants to be active as an MP, Labour Minister Jozef Mihál (SaS) said after a government session on Wednesday, July 14, the TASR newswire reported. Muňko was elected as an MP from Smer in the June parliamentary election. “It isn’t entirely normal to hold two such important posts at the same time. He should decide whether he’ll be an MP or the general director of Sociálna Poisťovňa,” said Mihál to TASR, indicating, however, that it will not be easy to dislodge Muňko as SP general director.
