IVO: Quality of democracy in Slovakia has improved
The quality of democracy in Slovakia improved in the second half of 2010, according to a report published on Thursday, January 20, by the Institute for Public Affairs (IVO). It rated the quality of democracy as having reached a mark of 2.8 in the last quarter of 2010, while the overall mark for the state for the whole year was 3.2. IVO evaluates the level of democracy with marks varying from 1 to 5, with 1 being the optimum state.
Radičová: Profitable companies won’t be privatised
The possible sale of shares owned by the state in companies is being considered only for firms that have long been loss-making, according to Prime Minister Iveta Radičová, speaking at a news conference following a government session on Wednesday, January 19.

Hrušovský to unveil bust of Dubček in Rome
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Pavol Hrušovský (KDH) is to unveil a bust of Alexander Dubček in Rome on Thursday, January 20. Dubček, a Communist Party leader, was the leading representative of the defeated 1968 Prague Spring reform movement in the former Czechoslovakia and has been a popular personality in Italy ever since.
Government replaces three Judicial Council members
At its session on January 19, the government recalled three members of Slovakia's Judicial Council before their five-year mandate expired, the TASR newswire reported. The measure involves two Supreme Court judges, Viliam Dohnanský and Daniel Hudák, who have been members of the council since July 2009 and September 2007, respectively. Hudák also previously held the post of justice ministry state secretary. The head of Bratislava III District Court, Richard Molnár, was also dismissed after serving in the post since July 2007. No reasons were given for the dismissals.
Opposition leader Fico presents Smer’s shadow cabinet
The leader of the strongest opposition party, Smer, and past prime minister Robert Fico presented a shadow cabinet on January 19 with the aim to monitor and respond to the government led by Prime Minister Iveta Radičová, the TASR newswire reported.
Government approves Interior Ministry’s proposed reforms to rescue system
Interior Minister Daniel Lipšic said a new concept in the organisation, running and development of Slovakia’s Integrated Rescue System (IZS) will lead to substantial reform of IZS which he said has many shortcomings at this time, the TASR newswire reported. "It often occurred that individual rescue units were unable to communicate because they don't use the same type of walkie-talkies, for example. Health rescuers communicate using different technologies than fire brigades and the police do. We want to harmonise this," said Lipšic about the reforms approved by the government on January 19. Lipšic added that coordination call centres which receive distress calls are to be interconnected more efficiently. There will be eight centres and all of them will be well-equipped to locate callers thanks to a satellite navigation system. A pilot project will be tested later this year in Prešov Region.
Bratislava mayor says embezzlement may have occurred at local waterworks company
Bratislava Mayor Milan Ftáčnik told media on January 19 that he believes there may have been embezzlement at the Bratislava Waterworks Company (BVS) because the volume of water produced by the company has increased but the amounts invoiced have been decreasing. Ftáčnik said BVS General Director Daniel Gemeran and his management team bear responsibility for the worsening economic status of the company of which Bratislava City is the majority shareholder.
Smer to seek Uhliarik’s ouster at special session of parliament
The largest opposition party, Smer, will propose calling an extraordinary session of parliament in order to seek the dismissal of Health Minister Ivan Uhliarik (Christian Democratic Movement (KDH)), Smer leader and former premier Robert Fico told a press conference on Tuesday, January 19.
