The Prešov city council approved the sale of land to U.S.-based Honeywell Turbo, an investor planning to build an assembly plant in the local Záborské industrial park, on May 25, the TASR newswire reported. All 30 city councillors voted in favour.

The investigation into the murder of prominent Slovak lawyer Ernest Valko is making progress, the head of the Special Department of the General Prosecutor's Office, Peter Šufliarsky, told the TASR newswire on May 24. "We now know how it is likely to have happened," Šufliarsky said. A special prosecutor has been assigned to the case.
Gašparovič to attend summit in Poland despite presence of Kosovo’s president
Slovakia's President Ivan Gašparovič is set to attend a presidential summit on central and eastern Europe in Warsaw on Friday, May 27, even though the event will also be attended by Kosovo's President Atifete Jahjaga. Slovakia does not officially recognise the former Serbian province, the TASR newswire reported. US President Barack Obama is also expected to attend the summit. Gašparovič's attendance at the event was confirmed on Tuesday by his spokesman Marek Trubač who added that the Polish hosts have accepted Slovakia's proposals for adjusting the protocol. The Polish organisers invited Kosovo's top representative, thereby creating a "diplomatic and legal obstacle" to the Slovak president's attendance, according to Trubač.
Ruling coalition prepares compromise on Minority Language law
After series of unofficial discussions, the Slovak ruling coalition is hopeful that it has come up with a compromise that will enable it to pass the Act on Minority Languages, the Sme daily wrote on May 25. On the evening of most of the MPs from the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) who had already supported the draft bill of Igor Matovič from the Ordinary People faction of the Freedom and Solidarity party were able to reach an agreement with the Most-Híd party.
Bear in Lučenec attacks a dog
A bear seen roaming around a residential area in Lučenec in Banská Bystrica region over the past weekend has become aggressive, entering the garden of a house in the nearby village of Veľká nad Ipľom before tearing apart and eating a dog, village mayor Gabriel Rácz told the TASR newswire on May 24. "There's an elderly lady living in the house where the bear attacked and ate the dog. Fortunately, the bear didn't threaten any of our people," said Rácz, who has warned locals about the animal via radio, calling on everyone to keep their pets indoors and not go outside after dark.
Sulík comments on status of SNS caucus in parliament
Speaker of Parliament Richard Sulík said on Tuesday, May 24, that the Slovak National Party (SNS) caucus in the Slovak parliament will be maintained until he decides otherwise, the TASR newswire reported. Sulík was commenting on the current situation of the SNS caucus, which was reduced to seven members as MPs Anna Belousovová and Rudolf Pučík left the caucus. According to the Parliamentary Rules of Procedure, at least eight MPs are needed to form a caucus.
NBS posts loss of over half a billion euros for 2010
Slovakia's central bank (NBS) posted a loss of more than €515 million last year, according to audited financial statements that parliament examined on Tuesday, May 24 the TASR newswire wrote. The loss is higher than in 2009, when NBS reported that it was just over €70 million in the red. NBS engages in many of the same financial and market transactions as it did pre-2009 and the adoption of the euro, but now does so as part of the Euro-system in coordination with the European Central Bank and other central banks.
Court and prosecutor made procedural errors leading to Mello's release
Both the Bratislava I District Court and a prosecutor from the Special Department at the General Prosecutor's Office made procedural errors that resulted in the release of murder suspect Karol Mello, Peter Šufliarsky, the head of the Special Department, said at a press conference on Tuesday, May 24 the TASR newswire reported. Mello, accused of a double murder of a boy and woman in the village of Most (Bratislava Region) in 2004, was released from custody by Bratislava Regional Court last week due to processing errors committed by the district court.
