President Gašparovič and US Ambassador discuss ISAF and bilateral relations
Bilateral relations and the continued presence of the Slovak ISAF contingent in Afghanistan were discussed at a meeting between Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič and US Ambassador to Slovakia Theodore Sedgwick on February 8, Gašparovič's spokesman Marek Trubač told the TASR newswire. "The president confirmed that Slovakia is determined to continue fulfilling its commitments as part of NATO's ISAF operation in Afghanistan and any major political decisions as to the future nature of the operation will be up to the future Slovak government," Trubač stated.
Radičová says her transfer of SIS document to investigators was appropriate
Prime Minister Iveta Radičová said after a meeting of the cabinet on February 8 that she presented a document concerning the so-called Gorilla file to investigators after receiving several legal analyses saying it was proper to do so, the TASR newswire reported. The Sme daily wrote on February 9 that Jaroslav Haščák of the Penta financial group asked to have the document excluded from further investigations of the Gorilla file because the Slovak Intelligence Service (SIS) had given it to then-Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda (SDKÚ) in 2006 but Dzurinda did not take any action at that time.
Parliamentary resolution asking Gašparovič to appoint Čentéš fails to gain majority
Parliament did not approve a resolution on February 8 asking President Ivan Gašparovič to appoint Jozef Čentéš as General Prosecutor. The resolution submitted by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Milan Hort from the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) received support from only 68 of 139 legislators present, the SITA newswire reported.
Slovakia records €82 million trade surplus December; €2.5 billion for 2011
Slovakia's foreign trade account posted a surplus of €82.1 million in December 2011, the Statistics Office (ŠÚ) announced on February 8 as reported by the TASR newswire. Total exports in December 2011 amounted to €4.349 billion, growth of 7.5 percent, TASR wrote based on the ŠÚ report. Imports rose by 0.5 percent in the month to reach €4.267 billion.
Roma party urges Slovak National Party to remove billboards
The head of the Roma Union Party (SRÚ), František Tanko, called on Slovak National Party (SNS) chairman Ján Slota on February 8 to immediately remove billboards that he believes attack Slovakia’s Roma minority. "We Gypsies are people and citizens of this country, too," Tanko said as quoted by the TASR newswire, announcing his plan to file a criminal complaint about SNS's billboards.

Nitra-based Foxconn, a Slovak branch of the Taiwanese producer of LCD television sets, has laid off 473 employees. The mass layoff, which the firm said was prompted by reduced orders, leaves it with 1,300 employees, Foxconn spokesperson Helen Windish said, as reported by the SITA newswire.
Areas hit hardest by cold snap to receive assistance from prime minister’s fund

Economy minister seeks approval for state aid to Samsung
A few weeks after electronics manufacturer Samsung was rumoured to be considering leaving Slovakia Economy Minister Juraj Miškov has submitted for interdepartmental review a proposal to provide the company with state financial aid amounting to €28 million, the Sme daily reported.
Haščák calls for Gorilla-related document to be disregarded
One of the co-owners of the Penta financial group, Jaroslav Haščák, has asked the special department at the Office of the General Prosecutor to disregard a document given to the investigators by Prime Minister Iveta Radičová which the interior minister, Daniel Lipšic, has said confirms the events described in the so-called Gorilla file, the Sme daily reported.
Matovič calls on candidates who do not want to submit to a lie detector test to leave his party
The leader of the Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽ) party, Igor Matovič, has said that if candidates for his party who object to undergoing a lie detector test do not leave of their own accord he himself will remove them from the party’s slate for the March 10 general election, the TASR newswire reported. Members of the Civic Conservative Party (OKS) and Conservative Democrats of Slovakia (KDS) parties, who oppose the lie detector tests, have already announced that they will leave the OĽ slate.
Journalists’ union criticises court’s ruling on Nicholson book
The temporary ban on publication of journalist Tom Nicholson's book about corruption in Slovakia issued by a Bratislava district court represents an unprecedented violation of freedom of speech and an unconstitutional attempt to influence public opinion, stated the Slovak Syndicate of Journalists (SSN) on February 7, the TASR newswire reported. "This is a dangerous precedent. SSN fully respects the independence of the Slovak judiciary and hopes that, despite the decision of the Bratislava I District Court on the still unpublished book by Tom Nicholson, the Slovak court system will respect the right to voice an opinion. With this verdict, the court turned back the clock to pre-1968, when it was possible to publish only what had been approved by state authorities on press supervision," stated the SSN, as quoted by TASR.
Poll indicates SDKÚ has support just above the threshold to enter parliament
The centre-right Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) party, chaired by Mikuláš Dzurinda, is polling just above the threshold required to enter parliament with 5.3 percent support among the electorate according to a poll conducted by Prieskumy, a new polling agency, the SITA newswire reported.
