6.66 percent of Slovak population in material need in January
The number of people in material need and eligible for benefits rose to 185,300 as of late January, an increase of 70 compared to a month earlier. According to the figures presented by the Central Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family (ÚPSVAR), the number of beneficiaries dropped by 4,600 in annual terms.
Danube Wings to launch Venice flights from Bratislava and Košice
From April 2012, Slovak airline Danube Wings will fly from Bratislava and Košice to Venice three times a week. The new route will be operated in cooperation with Italian carrier Megaride Air, making use of support it receives from Venice Airport and from local administration and businesses.
Sacked tax chief wanted to maintain old IT system
The recently sacked head of Slovakia’s tax authority, the Financial Administration (FS), Igor Krnáč, wanted to address the software problems now being encountered by his office by switching back to an old system installed by the company Novitech Tax, the Sme daily reported on 22 February.
Trnka yet to reveal identities of accused in wiretapping case
The former head of the Military Defence Intelligence (VOS) counter-intelligence service, Pavol Brychta, has not yet received any information about charges in the case of the wiretapping of journalists by his former agency despite the deputy general prosecutor Dobroslav Trnka saying at the beginning of the week that the first people had already been charged, the Sme daily reported.
Slovakia will take part in the second bailout package for Greece
Slovakia will contribute to the second bailout package for Greece after ministers of finance of the eurozone agreed to give another €130 billion to the country, while creditor banks simultaneously forgave Greece 53.5 percent of its debt to them, the Sme daily reported.

Slovakia’s unemployment rate hits 13.69 percent in January
The unemployment rate in Slovakia grew 0.10 percentage points in monthly terms in January, rising to 13.69 percent, the Central Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family reported on February 21 and hit the highest level since June 2004 when it was 13.91 percent, the SITA newswire wrote.
Poll finds Fico, Radičová and Gašparovič are the three most trusted politicians
Robert Fico, the chairman of Smer, the largest opposition party, enjoys the highest credibility among Slovak politicians with 37.1 percent of the respondents in a recent poll saying he deserves their trust, the SITA newswire reported.
Gorilla Protest may back on Bratislava streets this Friday
A fourth Gorilla Protest is expected in Bratislava on Friday, February 24, the TASR newswire wrote and its venue will be Hodžovo Square at the Presidential Palace. The Gorilla Protest organisers say the nature of planning for the rally has changed, with the public having more input as their opinions and suggestions can be put forth on Facebook.
Justice Minister Žitňanská may seek to chair SDKÚ
Lucia Žitňanská, Slovakia’s Justice Minister and vice-chair of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) party, told a press conference on February 20 that if she is elected party chair following the March 10 general election, SDKÚ will seek to reclaim public trust, the TASR newswire reported. Žitňanská stated that she had not consulted with the current party chairman, Mikuláš Dzurinda, in advance about her decision but had informed him just before the party's central council session on February 18.
Criminal charges brought in case of wiretapped Slovak journalists
The first criminal charges have been filed in connection with the wiretapping of journalists that surfaced last year, said acting General Prosecutor Dobroslav Trnka to the TA3 newsChannel, as reported by the SITA newswire on February 20.
Slovakia sells two and four-year bonds worth over €350 million
The Slovak Debt and Liquidity Management Agency (ARDAL) announced that it had sold Slovak government bonds worth €351.5 million at two auctions on February 20, Juraj Pekár from ARDAL told the TASR newswire. For two-year bonds, the agency accepted bids from investors of €283 million, with €90 million of the bids coming from non-resident investors. Overall demand was €563 million, with €120 million coming from foreign investors. The average annual interest rate on the two-year bonds was 2.54 percent.
Eurobarometer survey finds half of Slovaks encounter corruption
More than 50 percent of Slovaks reported in a recent Eurobarometer survey that they have had personal experience with corruption in everyday life, Ingrid Ludviková from the Representation of the European Commission in Slovakia told the TASR newswire on February 20. As many as 92 percent of respondents living in Slovakia said in the survey that they believe corruption is present in state bodies.
Nine applicants apply to head the Slovak National Theatre
Nine applicants have submitted their curriculum vitae to become the new general director of the Slovak National Theatre (SND), said Eva Chudinová, spokesperson for the Culture Ministry, to the TASR newswire on February 20. The ministry will announce the make-up of a selection commission later this week with the selection to take place between March 5 and 9. The deadline for submitting applications was set for February 16 with the posted date being the deadline so more applications may still arrive, according to Chudinová. Previous SND head Ondrej Šoth, a choreographer by vocation, submitted his resignation to Culture Minister Daniel Krajcer who accepted it. Šoth said his decision was aimed at helping to calm the situation at the SND amid recent inspections of the theatre.

Financial Administration director dismissed due to malfunctioning IT system
Finance Minister Ivan Mikloš dismissed Igor Krnáč from his post as head of the Financial Administration due to his failure to handle certain tasks and he will be replaced by the current director of the customs department, Mária Machová, the internet site Sme.sk reported.
Newest poll indicates SDKÚ would not reach parliament
If the parliamentary elections had been held between February 7 and February 12, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) would not have passed the 5-percent threshold needed for the party to reach parliament. The poll, conducted by the MVK polling agency, showed that the party chaired by Mikuláš Dzurinda would win the support of only 4.3 percent of voters, the TASR newswire reported.
Slovakia’s official pre-election campaign starts
Twenty-six political parties registered by the Central Election Committee for the upcoming parliamentary elections entered the official pre-election campaign on Saturday, February 18. They will now be officially allowed to present their goals in the broadcast media, the TASR newswire reported.
