Opposition nominee Ján Tóth will be appointed Slovak central bank (NBS) vice-governor, parliament decided on Tuesday, June 26.
SARIO: Chinese investors are eyeing Slovakia
Chinese companies are interested in establishing plants in Slovakia, according to the Slovak Agency for Investment and Trade Development (SARIO), representatives of which recently retuned from the Chinese province of Heilongjiang, which hosted the Euro-China Business Meeting Heilongjiang 2012. The investors reportedly plan to invest in IT, energy, heating, construction, railway infrastructure and the automotive industry, the SITA newswire reported.
Skanska SK and Strabag together offer lowest sum for construction of D1 section
Construction companies Skanska SK and Strabag have reportedly submitted the cheapest bid for construction of one of the remaining sections of Slovakia’s main D1 highway. They offered to build the Lietavská Lúčka-Dubná Skala section, including the 7.5-kilometre Višňové tunnel, for €338.3 million, the TASR newswire reported.
Prosecutor seeks suspension of minimum wage law
The Office of the Prosecutor General has requested that the Constitutional Court suspend the effectiveness of the law on minimum wages, since it considers it to be at odds with the constitution, as well as the European Convention on Human Rights. It has requested the abolition of an amendment passed by the previous government based on which hospital nurses were supposed to receive higher salaries as of April 2012, the Sme daily reported.
Paška criticises Hungarian MPs’ planned visit to Komárno
Slovakia’s Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška is protesting against a session of the Hungarian parliament’s committee for unity which is set to take place in the Slovak town of Komárno, Nitra Region, today (Wednesday, June 27). He said he plans to send a letter to his Hungarian counterpart, László Kövér, to express his disagreement with the Hungarian MPs’ move, the TASR newswire reported.
Kremnica: Europe’s golden centre
Located in the heart of Slovakia and almost hidden amid beautiful ranges of surrounding hills, we find the town of Kremnica, aka the golden centre of Europe. RTVS head recalled by parliament; most opposition MPs boycott vote
The vote on the recall of Miloslava Zemková, the head of Slovakia’s public-service radio and television, RTVS, was decided by only MPs from Smer party and two opposition deputies as all other opposition MPs left the parliamentary chamber or abstained from voting, saying they did not want to participate in a “farce staged by Smer”, the TASR newswire wrote. The vote was by secret ballot as proposed by Smer MPs.
Spanish metallurgy firm may invest in Prešov
It is likely that Funderia Condals, a Spanish company, will build a plant in the IPZ Záborské industrial park in Prešov, the Hospodárske Noviny economic daily wrote on June 26, adding that the firm operates in the metallurgy industry and could employ up to 400 people.
Gašparovič is first Slovak president to officially visit Japan
Showcasing Slovakia as a country that is suitable for direct Japanese investment and finding ways to boost economic cooperation as well more exchange in areas of science and culture will be the key focus of President Ivan Gašparovič's official visit to Japan between June 26 and 30, the President's Office told the TASR newswire. Gašparovič, who will be the first Slovak president to visit Japan, will be accompanied by his wife, Silvia, as well as Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák and Economy Minister Tomáš Malatinsky and a group of business leaders, including Robert Šimončič, the head of the Slovak Investment and Trade Development Agency (SARIO).
Nitra Region parliament recalls its deputy president
The deputy president of Nitra Region’s self-government, Vladislav Borík from Smer party, was removed from office after he was accused of tampering with public tenders, the Sme daily reported.
Slovakia’s tripartite council does not agree on levy for regulated firms
The government's proposals to introduce a special levy on banks and regulated companies in strategic industries as well as some measures to combat tax evasion were not completely supported at the tripartite negotiations on June 25 as employer representatives voiced objections, the SITA newswire wrote.
Smer proposes two candidates for the board of the Nation’s Memory Institute.
The Smer party has proposed two new members for vacant seats on the board of the Nation’s Memory Institute (ÚPN) and the Sme daily wrote on June 26 that one is Roman Lebeda (29), involved with a ‘social enterprise’ from eastern Slovakia, adding that the Gemer business, where Lebeda was in charge of education for unemployed and socially-disadvantaged people, is currently being investigated by the police.
Statistics Office publishes first data from the 2011 census
The first publication by the Statistics Office of the Slovak Republic compiled from the results of the 2011 census of people, houses and apartments indicates that the Slovak language is the mother tongue of 78.6 percent of Slovak residents, with the Hungarian language being the mother tongue of 9.4 percent of people living in Slovakia, and Romani being the mother tongue of 2.3 percent of the population, the SITA newswire reported.

Zemková to depart from RTVS
“THERE is no legal reason for my dismissal,” stated Miloslava Zemková, the current general director of Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS), the country’s public-service broadcaster, in response to a proposal by parliament’s culture and media committee to dismiss her. Despite what she called her successes in managing RTVS and support from opposition MPs and international organisations, MPs from Smer party voted to dismiss her with 82 votes in the 150-member parliament, the TASR newswire reported.
Finland and Slovakia discuss various forms of cooperation
Recent developments in the European Union, the debt crisis and opportunities for further bilateral cooperation were the key issues discussed at a meeting between Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič and the speaker of Finnish parliament, Eero Heinaluoma, on June 23, the TASR newswire reported.
Figeľ re-elected as chair of the Christian Democratic Movement
Ján Figeľ was re-elected chair of the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) after he received 261 of 324 votes from delegates attending the party congress in Ružomberok on June 23. The delegates also elected six deputy chairs but rejected changes in the party’s internal structure as proposed by MP Radoslav Procházka in response to his recent criticism of the party, the TASR newswire reported.

The three millionth automobile rolled off the production line at Bratislava-based Volkswagen Slovakia since the company launched production in 1991, the TASR newswire reported on June 22.

Godparents congratulate Bojnice Zoo’s orang-utans
THE SUMMER season opened in Slovakia’s oldest and biggest zoo in the town of Bojnice with several new attractions: a large terrarium with native African rocks that houses turtles, lizards, snakes and other reptiles and a living area for mini-mammals that live in baobab trunks. And five meerkats (Suricata suricatta) are another novelty at the Bojnice zoo.
