Corporate responsibility rising in Slovakia
SLOVAKIA will host the first annual Corporate Social Responsibility conference on May 20. Bearing the title A New Strategy For Business Success, this year's conference will look to the future.The organisers - the Business Leaders Forum Slovakia, Pontis Foundation, and Integra Foundation - say the event will offer a unique opportunity for business leaders to present and examine trends in corporate socially responsible corporate practices in Slovakia, the EU, and other countries.
A human Spartacus of today
THE LOOSE trilogy of original ballet works bringing epic historical characters to the Slovak National Theatre (SND) this season has come to a close. The last such character, Spartacus, joined his "colleagues" Rasputin and Caligula on May 7.A team similar to the one that worked on the ballet Rasputin, led by the young and well-established director and choreographer Ján Ďurovčík, met again.
Folk music echoes loudly
DURING its 55th anniversary celebration last October, Lúčnica danced to a 36-member orchestra. Current and former musicians of the folk dance and music ensemble gathered together to perform only for that occasion.But the exaltation that resulted from such a reunion understandably could not pass without consequences. It led to a new project, the 55-member Golden Violin orchestra.
Opponents up in arms
SLOVAK involvement in the US-led mission in Iraq has become a much-discussed issue in Slovakia, and one that is only growing, as members of the ruling coalition recently joined the voices of doubt.The ruling Christian Democrats, who one year ago voted against the deployment of a Slovak contingent of about 100 soldiers in Iraq, have openly declared that the presence of Slovak military engineers there should be investigated and gradually terminated.

ONE OF the most significant documentary photographers of the 20th century, Martin Martinček, died at the age of 91 on May 2, only a day after Slovakia's entry to the EU.
