Think-tank says government has wasted public finances
The government has wasted €265 million throughout 2008 and in the first quarter of 2009, the economic think-thank INESS reported, based on the results of its monitoring of media reports. According to INESS, several cases of cronyism occurred, as the turnover of ministers in the current government suggests, the SITA newswire reported.
Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister meets US Secretary of State
SLOVAK Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák met with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Washington on May 7 in their first official meeting since Lajčák took up his post. They discussed cooperation between the US and Slovakia in economic areas and possibilities of intensifying it as well the current economic crisis and joint steps in ameliorating its impacts, the SITA newswire reported.
Economy Minister names SARIO employee as new director
Economy Minister Ľubomír Jahnátek nominated Juraj Kiesel to the post of director of the Slovak Agency for Investment and Trade Development (SARIO) on May 11 to secure continuous activity, capacity for action and the functionality of the Agency, the TASR newswire was told by ministry spokesman Darius Bosják.
SNS says new Environment Minister to be proposed later this week
The co-ruling Slovak National Party’s (SNS) new nominee for the post of environment minister, previously set to be announced by the party on Monday, May 11, will only be known later this week as discussions within the party are still under way, SNS spokesperson Jana Benková told the TASR newswire on May 11. Once chosen, the party’s nominee will still have to be approved by Prime Minister Robert Fico, who on Sunday cautioned that he “will want to have a say in the selection of this person.” Former environment minister Ján Chrbet (also an SNS nominee) was recalled from his post on May 6 over the sale of emissions quotas. Slovak police seize 3.5 kg of heroin and detain one man
More than 3.5 kilograms of heroin were seized by the national Anti-Drug Unit of the Slovak Police Corps. The estimated street value of the drug would be around €1,290,000. The drug, from which about 120,000 individual doses could be made, was seized in Holíčska Street in Bratislava in a flat that served as a storage depot for narcotics, the SITA newswire wrote.
Greenpeace wants expert named as Environment Minister
Environmental activists from Greenpeace called on the government on May 11 to place an expert in the field in the post of environment minister, reported the TASR newswire.

Interesting archaeological research is being conducted in the area where the new R1 motorway will replace the infamous “death road” of Zlaté Moravce between Nitra and Tekovské Nemce. It was just a few hundred metres from here that a pyxis, an oval-shaped jewel box, was discovered in 1974 by a group of local boys. This pyxis is made of ivory and its origin is dated back to the 5th century.
Industrial employment fell 13.3% in March from previous year
Employment in industry in Slovakia shrank 13.3 percent y-o-y in March, the Slovak Statistics Office informed the SITA newswire. The number of employees fell also in the wholesale sector by 23 percent, in restaurants and pubs by 19.4 percent, in sales and repairs of motor vehicles by 10 percent, in accommodation services by 7.5 percent, in selected market services by 4.7 percent and in the retail business by 2.2 percent.
EU citizens living in Slovakia can vote in EP elections
Voters from other member countries of the European Union (EU) can participate in the June elections for members of the European Parliament (EP) while living in Slovakia, the SITA newswire reported.
Industrial output fell by 18% y-o-y in March
The fall in Slovakia's industrial output slowed in March compared with the two immediately previous months. The Slovak Statistics Office reported a y-o-y fall of 18 percent in the third month of 2009 compared with the revised 25.6 percent drop in February and the January fall of 25.4 percent.

GDP: glum forecast by EC
OPTIMISM swept through Slovak markets last year after the European Commission (EC) released an economic spring forecast for 2008 and 2009 predicting 7-percent GDP growth, a move which helped open the gates to the eurozone for Slovakia. The country adopted the euro on January 1. This year, however the spring tidings from Brussels have only served to confirm what Slovaks had already learnt from the country’s central bank, market watchers and, in many cases, their own experience: the economy will dip into recession in 2009, unemployment will grow and the public finances will come under increasing strain.
