Prime Minister Fico says SNS has proposed new Environment Minister
The Slovak National Party (SNS) has proposed that current Agriculture Ministry State Secretary Viliam Turský should become the new Environment Minister, replacing Ján Chrbet, who was dismissed in early May, Prime Minister Robert Fico announced on Monday, May 18. Fico also said that he will take 24 hours to consider whether he will propose Turský's appointment to President Ivan Gašparovič, the TASR newswire wrote. Chrbet was dismissed due to a controversy over the sale of carbon-dioxide emissions quotas last year to a formerly unknown company at a price considerably lower than those charged by other countries.

The vice-chair of the Civic Conservative Party (OKS), Ondrej Dostál, has filed a criminal complaint in connection with information in the media concerning alleged pressure exerted by the Mafia on Constitutional Court judge Ladislav Orosz, including an alleged attempt to poison his wife, Dostál confirmed to the TASR newswire on May 18.

SMK’s chairman says party will not campaign as opposite of SNS
The opposition ethnic-Hungarian SMK party will not present itself as the polar opposite of the co-ruling Slovak National Party (SNS), SMK chairman Pál Csáky told the TASR newswire. “We [SMK], as a member of the European People's Party (EPP) caucus along with SDKÚ and KDH, are interested in winning more seats than [governing-coalition party] Smer, which means to show that the Slovak Right is more powerful than the Left,” said Csáky at the SMK Republic Council in Rožňava on May 16.
Slovakia’s service sector is secure place for investment
Among developing economies, Slovakia is the most attractive investment destination for the services sector according to this year's PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) EM20 Index report, which tracks investment risk in developing markets for both production and services, reported the TASR newswire. PwC has updated its rankings because of rapidly changing conditions related to the financial and economic crisis. The importance of knowing the risk rate when investing, according to PwC, is even more important in this period of crisis than in a period of prosperity, wrote TASR.
VW restarts production at Bratislava plant on May 18
Volkswagen's plant in Bratislava restarts production on May 18, the TASR newswire was told by the company's spokesman Vladimír Machalík. Production at the factory was suspended for the entire previous week as a consequence of the global economic crisis, following two other manufacturing interruptions between February 16-25 and April 6-17. “Both production lines at the Volkswagen Slovakia plant in Bratislava will restart on Monday morning. The company used the interruption to prepare the plant for production of the new small family cars,” said Machalík.
