Technical problems 'only reason' for diverted flight, says Air Slovakia
Air Slovakia has told The Slovak Spectator that technical problems were the only reason that one of its aeroplanes was diverted to Bratislava on Sunday, January 17.

Newspaper reports that Slovakia will accept three Guantanamo prisoners
Slovakia will accept three prisoners from the US prison facility at Guantanamo Bay, writes the sme.sk web portal, quoting a source from the Slovak Foreign Ministry. It wrote that the ministry is to officially announce later on January 19 that Slovakia will accept three Guantanamo detainees over the course of this year.

Investigation started in the case of alleged internet scam costing €60
Police have started investigating a Banská Bystrica-based company Pro Content that charged €60 to internet users who clicked on website downloads on portal.sk and basne-portal.sk. After clicking and filling out a questionnaire, they received an invoice, according to the Sme daily.
Slovak Vice Prime Minister says ultra-right marches won’t resolve Roma issue
Problems with the Roma population will not be resolved by the marches organised recently by Marian Kotleba and his ultra-right Slovenská Pospolitosť organisation, said the Deputy Prime Minister for Human Rights and Minorities, Dušan Čaplovič, at a meeting between Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič and representatives of the country's minorities on Monday, January 18, the TASR newswire reported.

Council of Europe representatives arrive to review Slovakia’s State Language Act
Three representatives of the Council of Europe’s (CE) advisory body, the Venice Commission, arrived for a two-day visit to Slovakia on January 18 to give their opinion on the State Language Act, a recently adopted amendment to which led to protests from the country’s Hungarian minority over perceived limitations on ethnic-language rights, the TASR newswire wrote. Invited by the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Commission experts will discuss the issue with Bratislava-based authorities, including the ministries of culture, education, and foreign affairs, the Vice Prime Minister for Human Rights and Minorities, Dušan Čaplovič, and ethnic groups and civil society in Dunajská Streda.
Slovakia’s jobless rate hits 12.66 percent in December
Slovakia’s unemployment rate rose again in December after remaining unchanged the month earlier, increasing from 12.40 percent in November to 12.66 percent, the Centre of Labour, Social Affairs and Family announced on January 18, as reported by the SITA newswire.
Passengers on Albanian flight to Bologna forced to spend a night in Bratislava
Passengers on an Albanian Airlines flight from Tirana bound for Bologna, operated by Air Slovakia, left Bratislava airport on Monday, January 18 on an Amsterdam Airlines plane after an unexpected, forced one-day stop in Slovakia’s capital, the SITA newswire wrote.
Healthcare supervision office fines private health insurer Dôvera
Slovakia’s largest private health insurer, Dôvera, will need to pay a fine of €100,000, the SITA newswire wrote. This is based on a decision of the Director of the government’s Healthcare Supervision Office, Richard Demovič, who as the appellate authority made a ruling on an appeal filed by the insurer against the decision of the office from April 2009.
Prime Minister of Montenegro visits Slovakia
The Prime Minister of Montenegro, Milo Dukanovic, is paying his first official visit to Slovakia on Monday, January 18 since the country’s declaration of independence from Serbia in 2006, the TASR newswire wrote. Dukanovic and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico are to assess the level of bilateral relations and scope for fostering political dialogue and strengthening economic cooperation.
Bill proposed to restore property owned by Evangelical church
The Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession is expected to recover its property confiscated by the communist regime via an amendment to the law on restitution of property ownership to religious communities submitted in a joint effort by ruling coalition and opposition lawmakers, the TASR newswire wrote on January 16.

Slovaks took good advantage of car scrapping scheme in 2009
The number of used passenger cars and cars less than 3.5 tonnes imported into Slovakia in 2009 fell by 21.64 percent on an annual basis to stand at 78,834, the Automotive Industry Association told the TASR newswire.
