Fico to become deputy speaker
Outgoing Prime Minister Robert Fico is the Smer party’s nominee for the post of deputy speaker of parliament, the TASR newswire reported, citing comments by Fico himself, on Wednesday, July 7.
SaS-initiated referendum to be held on September 18
Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič has set the date for a referendum initiated by the SaS party. It will take place on Saturday, September 18. The referendum features questions on the cancellation of TV and radio licence fees, curbs to MPs’ immunity, a reduction in the number of MPs, a maximum price tag for government cars, internet voting and changes to the Press Code.
€17 million to be spent on education in marginalised Roma communities
The Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport has announced the first round of a call for projects to improve education in marginalised Roma communities within the Operational Programme Education. The ministry's agency for EU structural funds will allocate €17 million for the programme. Applications can be submitted from all regions across Slovakia except Bratislava.
Survey: Most Slovaks consider themselves middle class
Most citizens of Slovakia regard themselves as members of the middle class, based on the socio-economic situation of their households. This was one of the findings from a survey conducted by the Infostat Centre for Social Research for the Finance Ministry. The survey observed how individuals and families handle their finances.
KDH announces its nominations for government and parliament posts
The Christian-Democratic Movement (KDH) has made public its nominees for the next Slovak government, which will be led by Iveta Radičová of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ).
Radičová confirms opposition will control procurement authority

New Slovak ambassador to China, František Dlhopolček, is introduced in Mongolia
The new Slovak ambassador to China, František Dlhopolček, handed over his credentials to Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdoryo, the SITA newswire wrote on July 6 based on a news release from the Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry. As ambassador to China, Dlhopolček is also responsible for Mongolia and the Korean People’s Republic.
Slovak hospitals owe €19 million to Sociálna Poisťovňa in April
At the end of April 2010, Slovakia’s social security provider, Sociálna Poisťovňa, reported it had claims against health care facilities for €19.057 million, down €271,100 against the previous month. The social security provider informed the SITA newswire on July 2 that these claims came from fifteen hospitals – four are under the jurisdiction of the Health Ministry and the rest are facilities that have transformed their structure.
Year-on-year decline in Slovak retail sales softens in May
The year-on-year decline in retail sales softened in May according to data from Slovakia’s Statistics Office which showed retail sales reached €1.412 billion in May, down 3.1 percent year-on-year compared to a 5.4-percent y-o-y decrease reported in April, the SITA newswire reported.
Employers claim that Slovakia’s Labour Ministry violated tripartite rules
The National Association of Employees (RÚZ) has urged the Ministry of Labour to withdraw from interdepartmental review a draft decree about the extension of the applicability of the higher-level collective agreement in the engineering sector between the Federation of Mechanical Engineering of the Slovak Republic and KOVO metalworkers trade union, the SITA newswire wrote.
Two percent of convictions in Slovakia went unpunished in 2009
Approximately 2 percent of people who were convicted of having perpetrated a crime – 622 individuals – did not receive sentences from the courts in 2009, according to statistics released by the Slovak Justice Ministry, the TASR newswire reported. This is primarily applied to female and juvenile lawbreakers, as 383 women and 88 youths are included in the figure, TASR wrote, while a total of nearly 31,000 people were sentenced last year.
Deloitte survey finds fewer tax inspections in Slovakia but higher taxes imposed
In spite of an ongoing year-on-year drop in tax inspections, the amount of taxes imposed after such inspections has been on the rise in the past few years, according to a survey conducted by Deloitte Slovensko, the TASR newswire wrote. The survey included more than 100 companies from across Slovakia and more than 70 of them recorded no tax inspection or at most one inspection in the past five years, TASR wrote on July 5.
Most-Hid’s Bugár will nominate László Solymos to head the party’s parliamentary caucus
Most-Híd chairman Béla Bugár told the TASR newswire on Monday, July 5 that he will nominate Laszlo Solymos as his party’s parliamentary caucus chairman. However, it will be up to caucus members to ratify Solymos as their party whip.
Most-Híd party slots Simon and Chmel into new cabinet positions
The executive body of Most-Hid party on Monday, July 5, in Šamorín approved its nominees for ministerial posts in the forthcoming centre-right government and it also decided that its party chairman, Béla Bugár, will be a candidate for one of four vice-chair posts in parliament, the TASR newswire wrote. In line with expectations, Most-Híd vice-chair Zsolt Simon will again become agriculture minister, a post that he held from 2002 to 2006. Another vice-chair of the party, Rudolf Chmel, will take up the post of deputy prime minister for minorities. Most-Híd has not yet decided who will become the head of the currently scrapped Environment Ministry, which the new government plans to re-establish – abandoning the outgoing government’s plans to transfer its responsibilities to the ministry of agriculture.

JUDGE Jozef Soročina of the Michalovce District Court, who was often called a protégé of Supreme Court President Stefan Harabin, is retiring from his post, the Sme daily reported on its website.
Nitra students smash their own record
Pupils at Nitra elementary schools set a new Slovak record on June 23 for the number of children singing at the same time in one location. On Svätopluk Square, 416 students from all 14 Nitra elementary schools sang a programme of Slovak folk songs, breaking their own record set last year when 320 young singers performed in the Nitra amphitheatre. After the students’ successful performance, the record will be certified and recorded in the Book of Slovak records.
Man dies after being tear-gassed by police
THE NON-GOVERNMENTAL organisation People against Racism has filed a criminal complaint over the death of a Roma civil patrol member in mid May in Tornaľa, Banská Bystrica Region. The man died after an incident in which police deployed tear gas against him. The organisation claims that police used an inappropriate amount of tear gas, the SITA newswire reported.
