Police officer left his automatic rifle on car roof
A Bratislava police officer lost his service-issue automatic rifle after driving off with it lying on the roof of his car, the Sme.sk and Cas.sk websites reported on February 22. The lost weapon, a Vz. 58 assault rifle, was found on Monday evening at a municipal bus stop on Lamačská cesta, Bratislava.
Passenger numbers at Bratislava Airport dropped in January

Illegal cigarette manufacturer busted in Pezinok
Slovak customs officers have discovered the largest illegal production facility for cigarettes in recent years as they seized three illegal machines for making cigarettes, a huge amount of tobacco and cigarettes in a building of a company at Drevárska Street in the town of Pezinok in western Slovakia, the SITA newswire wrote on February 21.
Crazy Shops under pressure as Slovak president signs banned drugs list
The so-called “Crazy Shops” chain in Slovakia may lose business after Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič signed an amendment to the law on narcotics, psychotropic substances and preparations which was prepared by the Ministry of Health and adopted by parliament on February 11. The legislation will add 43 substances to the list of banned narcotics and psychotropic substances beginning March 1, the SITA newswire reported.
New industrial park to be built near Trenčín
Approximately 1,000 new jobs will be created in the village of Hrádok, in the Nové Mesto nad Vahom district as the Bratislava-based firm Villian Invest plans to build an industrial park with an area of 192,597 square meters worth €39.5 million, the SITA newswire reported on February 21.
Slovakia’s jobless rate climbs close to 13 percent in January
Slovakia's unemployment rate in January reached record-high figures for the post-crisis period at 12.98 percent, an annual increase of 0.52 percentage points, the Labour, Social Affairs and Family Office (ÚPSVaR) stated on February 21 as reported by the TASR newswire. A total of 391,637 jobseekers were registered at Slovakia’s job centres in January, with 349,196 of them immediately available to begin work. The number grew by 11,293 compared to December 2010 but was down by 183 year-on-year.
Transport Ministry reduces severance payments for managers of state-owned firms
Transport Minister Ján Figeľ on February 16 reduced the ceiling for severance payments provided to managers of state-owned companies that come under the remit of his ministry while also introducing more stringent eligibility conditions, Ľubomír Tuchscher, the director of the ministry's PR department told the TASR newswire on February 21. Only managers who have served for at least six months in their posts in state-owned companies will be entitled to severance payments according to the new rules. These managers will be given a severance payment equal to three times the monthly remuneration for serving as a member of the board of directors.
Deaflympic organiser in Slovakia charged with fraud
An investigator from the Office for the Fight Against Corruption pressed charges of fraud against Jaromír Ruda, organiser of the cancelled Winter Deaflympic Games in Slovakia, the Police Corps’ spokesperson, Andrea Dobiašová, told the TASR newswire on February 21. Police have charged that Ruda, who served as president of the Slovak Deaflympic Committee, fraudulently borrowed €10 million from at least four companies for securing the Winter Deaflympics, saying that to obtain the loans, Ruda provided a false guarantee from the Bank of Columbia.
Police bring charges for 2009 assault on top Slovak tax official
Five men who assaulted Ján Dobrovič, the deputy general director of Slovakia’s Tax Directorate, in November 2009 were paid €2,000 for carrying out the attack and the motive was most probably due to Dobrovič’s government position, the SITA newswire reported.
Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Dzurinda comments on Libyan situation
Slovakia is not at this time considering ending a special aircraft to Libya to bring back its citizens, Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda said in Brussels on February 21, the TASR newswire reported. Speaking ahead of a session of the EU's General Affairs Council (GAC) and the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC), Dzurinda added that the Slovak government's approach to the issue may alter depending on the circumstances.
Profesia career fair in Bratislava draws a record number of visitors
Around 18,000 people visited this year's Profesia Days 2011 jobs fair in Bratislava on February 16-17 according to Lucia Burianová, spokesperson for the profesia.sk website, the TASR newswire reported. This figure is significantly higher than last year's 10,000. Hundreds of job-seekers landed new jobs at the fair, Burianová noted.

Transport Ministry and UNAS truckers’ association sign agreement on cooperation
The Transport, Construction and Regional Development Ministry and the Slovak Road Hauliers Association (UNAS) signed an agreement on cooperation that seeks to create a favourable business environment in the sphere of road transport, the TASR newswire was told by the ministry’s spokesman Ľubomír Tuchscher on February 18. The content of the agreement is the same as an agreement signed between the ministry and the ČESMAD truckers’ organisation.
Visegrad Four to take the forefront at GLOBSEC forum in Bratislava
The Visegrad Group (V4) consisting of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary, which is marking its 20th anniversary in 2011, will have a prominent place at the sixth GLOBSEC 2011 global security forum to take place in Bratislava between March 2-4, the PR department of the Slovak-Atlantic Commission, organiser of the event, told the TASR newswire on February 20. The forum will coincide with a meeting of the foreign affairs ministers of the V4 countries and the Eastern Partnership. In addition, Hungary is currently chairing the Council of the European Union, with Poland taking over this role in the latter half of the year.
