On October 28, a man from Detva, aged 30, was apprehended while transporting drugs from the Czech Republic to Slovakia in his car.
Inflation accelerates slightly
THE GROWTH rate of consumer prices in Slovakia in October this year accelerated slightly. According to the Statistics Office, the annual inflation rate measured by the national consumer price index was 3.8 percent, compared to 3.6 percent in September. Over the first ten months compared to the same period of 2011, consumer prices increased in total by 3.7 percent. Month-on-month, consumer prices increased in October by 0.3 percent.

ECHR confirms forced sterilisations took place
WHILE Slovak politicians have consistently incorporated Roma issues on their agendas, some harvesting criticism from human rights watchdogs for resorting to populism, public discussion has tended to focus on living conditions, housing and school attendance. One issue that has remained overlooked by politicians is the forced sterilisation of Roma women. However, rulings issued by the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) over the past year in favour of Roma women show that such practices have occurred on repeated occasions in recent years.
OECD gives advice on speeding growth
SLOVAKIA has been told by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) how to boost economic growth. Structural reforms and consolidation could help the country to increase growth by more than one fifth compared to the government’s current, less ambitious approach, the OECD found, as reported by the Hospodárske Noviny daily on November 13.
Most young logisticians will come from Martin
The Secondary School of Industrial Engineering in Martin (SPŠ Martin) is one of the first schools in Slovakia to address the shortage of educated logisticians. Seeking aid in theoretical as well as in practical training of skilled specialists was the main reason behind partnering with the market leader in the field - logistical company Gebrüder Weiss. As of now, in the third year of its operation, the newly created subject field at the school is lead by seven expertly trained teachers mentoring the 78 students.
Plane carrying low-level radioactive materials in accident at Bratislava Airport
An aeroplane owned by courier and logistics operator DHL veered off the runway at Bratislava Airport shortly after 5:00 on Friday, November 16. Pictures from the scene showed the plane with its nose and engines resting on the ground, suggesting it had suffered a failure of its front landing gear. Nobody was hurt in the accident, airport spokesperson Dana Madunická stated via a media release.

Jozef Kollár from the Slovak Public Administration Trade Union (SLOVES) was elected the new head of the Trade Union Confederation (KOZ) at the organisation's seventh congress in Bratislava on Thursday, November 15, TASR learnt.

Harmonised inflation reached 3.9 percent year-on-year in October
EU-harmonised inflation in Slovakia reached 3.9 percent year-on-year in October, 0.1 percentage points higher than the figure recorded in September, the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) announced on Thursday, November 14.
Specialists blast away part of collapsed bridge in eastern Slovakia
Specialists on Thursday, November 15, succeeded – at their second attempt – in blasting away the damaged section of a highway bridge under construction in eastern Slovakia that collapsed on November 2, killing four workers and injuring 12 more. The team of specialists had attempted to blow up part of the bridge on Tuesday, but failed.

Employment rate in Slovakia falls 0.1% in third quarter
In the third quarter of this year, 2.214 million people were employed in Slovakia. According to a flash estimate published by the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) on Thursday, November 15, overall employment declined by 0.1 percent compared with the same period of last year.
Government bonds aimed at private citizens could be issued next year
The Slovak Finance Ministry plans to issue government bonds aimed at private domestic investors as early as next year. Finance Minister Peter Kažimír announced the plan after a cabinet session on Wednesday, November 14.
Slovak GDP posts third quarter growth
The Slovak economy kept growing in the third quarter of 2012. It grew by 0.6 percent in July-September, maintaining the same quarter-on-quarter growth rate as in the second quarter, seasonally adjusted. But the year-on-year comparison shows a slow-down, with growth decreasing from the second quarter’s 2.6 percent to 2.2 percent in the third quarter, the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) revealed in a flash estimate that it published on Wednesday, November 14.
Business lobby: Worsening of business environment is accelerating
The Business Alliance of Slovakia (PAS), a lobbying group representing businesses, has stated in a press release that the business environment in the country worsened in the third quarter of 2012. The current value of its Business Environment Index, calculated based on PAS surveys, stands at 79.1 points. It declined by 3.73 percent compared to the previous quarter.

Dušan Galis, former coach of the Slovak national football team and government proxy for youth and sports under the first government of Robert Fico, will be appointed to the same post on Thursday, November 15, the government decided on Wednesday.
Police officer to lose his job over burning EU flag
Trnava police officer Marián Mišún, who burned an EU flag at the ‘Together for a Decent and Safe Life’ protest march on Saturday, November 11, will lose his job, Trnava police chief Igor Kelesi confirmed to the TASR newswire on Wednesday. The former regional head of the Matica Slovenska cultural heritage organisation in Púchov, Mišún, is currently on leave, and set to return to work on November 19. His superior initially wanted to wait for a court verdict first before taking any action, but has since changed his mind.
Smer MPs vote down opposition-proposed programme as expected
A special session of parliament on the rapid loss of trust in the judicial system in Slovakia initiated by opposition parties, slated for 13:00 on Wednesday, November 14, ended shortly after being opened because, as expected, Smer MPs refused to support the session’s agenda.
