Decline in construction output slowed in August
The year-on-year decline in construction output, persisting since the beginning of the year, slowed in August by 0.2 percent to €566.1 million, the SITA newswire wrote. In July, construction output shrank 5.7 percent y-o-y, following June's softening of 0.3 percent.
SNS turns to general prosecutor to seek SMK’s abolition
The leaders of the one of the junior coalition partners in the Slovak government, the Slovak National Party (SNS), have filed a motion with the country’s General Prosecutor’s Office seeking to have another parliamentary party, the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK), disbanded.
SMK unruffled by SNS bid to have it dissolved
Slovakia’s Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) is not worried that it might be dissolved, as it views an attempt by the Slovak National Party (SNS) to have it abolished as merely part of a campaign in the run-up to regional and local administration elections in November and next year's general election, SMK MP József Berényi said on October 7.
Štefanov: We won't lose a single euro over bulletin-board tender
Construction and Regional Development Minister Igor Štefanov said his visit to Brussels on Tuesday, October 6, to discuss the so-called bulletin-board tender was a success, the minister announced at a press conference on Wednesday, October 7. This was despite the EC announcing that Slovakia would not be reimbursed for around €11 million of costs arising from the tender because of serious irregularities in the way it was conducted. The costs must instead be borne by Slovak taxpayers.
Fair-Play Alliance withdraws action against Construction Ministry
The Fair-Play Alliance (AFP), a Slovak transparency watchdog, has withdrawn its complaint against the Construction and Regional Development Ministry because the case has been taken over by the Prosecutor's Office, which is now deciding whether it will pursue the alleged 'unjustified enrichment' of companies engaged in the so-called bulletin-board tender, according to a statement issued by AFP on Wednesday, October 7.
Health-care facilities owe €41.7 million to Sociálna Poisťovna
Receivables of the social insurance provider Sociálna Poisťovňa (SP) from health-care facilities amounted to €41.713 million as of the end of June 2009, states a document submitted to the Slovak cabinet on unpaid health insurance premiums on October 6, the SITA newswire reported. Hospitals owed €32.672 million to the social security provider in the same period a year ago.

SNS’s Slota says media should refund funds paid in ‘bulletin-board’ scandal
The funds from the bulletin-board tender at the Slovak Environment Ministry which cost Marián Janušek his ministerial post were spent mainly for advertising in media, according to the Slovak National Party (SNS) chairman, Ján Slota. “Those media are now the first to beat around and criticise. Well, let them return the money – this should be a little problematic, I guess,” Slota said in an interview with the SITA newswire.
Čaplovič to speak with Swedish Environment Minister about UN climate conference
Swedish Environment Minister Andreas Carlgren is meeting with the Slovak Vice-Prime Minister for a Knowledge-Based Society, European Affairs, Human Rights and Minorities, Dušan Čaplovič, on October 7 in Bratislava to discuss preparations for the World Climate Conference later this year, the TASR newswire was told by Ľubomír Šišák from Čaplovič's office. The conference hopes to establish a new global agreement on climate change. Sweden, which currently holds the EU presidency, wants EU countries to intensively negotiate future co-operation in dealing with climate change. The basic question is: how much reduction in emissions is the EU able to approve as its commitment in the new global convention after 2012. Countries such as Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and Great Britain promote a 30-percent reduction by 2020 compared to the emission levels in 1990.
Judicial Council denounces judges' protest
The Judicial Council considers the 'Five Sentences' initiative, in which 105 judges expressed their discontent with the state of the judiciary in Slovakia, to be an attempt to drag the judiciary into politics, council member and spokesman Juraj Sopoliga said on October 6.
