Estimates show health care system is short 9,000 nurses
According to estimates, Slovakia needs approximately 9,000 nurses and this shortage is felt most acutely by smaller hospitals, Maria Levayová, president of the Slovak Chamber of Nurses and Birth Assistants (SKSaPA), told the TASR newswire on October 1.
State budget showed surplus of Sk4.3 billion in September
Slovakia's state budget showed a surplus of Sk4.3 billion (€143.3 million) in the January-September period, the Finance Ministry announced on October 1. The figure is down from a surplus of Sk5.1 billion (€168.76 million) that was recorded to the end of August. Compared to September 2007, when the budget showed a deficit of Sk615 million (€20.41 million), the figure for September 2008 also constitutes a year-on-year improvement of Sk4.932 billion (€163.71 million). The state budget draft for the 2008 as a whole approved by parliament at the end of the last year projected a state budget deficit of Sk32 billion (€1.06 billion). Budget incomes for the first nine months of this year stood at Sk241.867 billion (€8.03 billion), or 69.45 percent of the planned sum for the whole of 2008 (Sk348.252 billion, €11.56 billion). State budget expenditures for the same period were Sk237.549 billion (€7.89 billion), which is 62.47 percent of the projected sum of Sk380.233 billion (€12.62 billion). TASR
Martináková launches petition drive for presidential bid
Zuzana Martináková, a presidential candidate from the Free Forum (SF), launched a Slovakia-wide petition drive on October 1 to collect the 15,000 signatures needed to make it onto the ballot.
Health insurer budgets to be approved by government
Health insurance companies will have to submit their budgets to the government for approval, according to an amendment to the law on health insurance companies and health care surveillance approved on October 1.
Prime Minister discussed Pezinok waste dump with town representatives
Environment Minister Ján Chrbet should meet representatives of the town of Pezinok and the civil initiative Waste Heaps Do not Belong in Towns in the coming days and examine documents and arguments against the construction of a waste dump in the town, reported Zuzana Čaputová, the legal representative of the initiative after a meeting with Prime Minister Robert Fico on Wednesday, October 1.
