Finland hosts Slovak artists

The classical joy in serious music

THE ŽILINA competition for young and talented European musicians is over and the jury is divided: international experts awarded the Music Critics' Prize to Latvian violinist Baiba Skride, but the public chose the event's youngest participant as its favourite, violinist Nemanja Radulovic from Serbia and Montenegro/France.

Blatnica

TAKEN by the art photographer Pavol Socháň, this fine picture of Blatnica castle and its environs was taken in the early 1900s. The castle dates back to the 14th century. By 1790 it had been abandoned.

Russian choir on pilgrimage

TO CELEBRATE the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, the 45-member St Nikolai Church Choir of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow set out on a pilgrimage around the capitals of the countries where battles with the Nazis took place. Between May 2 and 5, the choir will perform in Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna and Prague.

SOCIOLOGISTS recently started discussing an interesting but common phenomenon: the rest of Slovakia is envious of Bratislava's success and considers the capital more privileged than other parts of the country.

Tinkers pass on artistic gift

THE TINKER'S craft is part of the rich colourful mosaic of Slovak culture. The Slovak tinker tradition arose as a small, humble, house-to-house occupation in the regions of Kysuce and Trenčín in Slovakia's northwest, and the Spiš region in the northeast of the country.

Tracking down old Bratislava

ECONOMY Minister Pavol Rusko sparked hope for another big investment when he confirmed that Slovakia is still in negotiations with Hankook Tire Company, Korea's biggest tyre manufacturer.

Spanish drama in Slovak capital

BRATISLAVA'S Astorka theatre hosted the 12th European Spanish-language theatre festival from April 17 to 22, the second time the festival took place in Slovakia.In the evenings, 16 groups of students from bilingual high schools in the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Russia, Bulgaria, Romania, Spain and Slovakia performed plays written by Spanish authors.

How low can they go?

THE PUBLIC's interest in mortgages remains high. Part of the attraction is that interest rates remain low, even though the Finance Ministry abolished housing loan subsidies in January. While many feared that the loss of state subsidies would shrink the mortgage market, in fact it is growing.
