A long-running defamation lawsuit between Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) deputy chairman Ivan Mikloš and Prime Minister Robert Fico, leader of the Smer party, was adjourned once more at the Bratislava I District Court on Wednesday, June 16, the SITA newswire wrote.
Dell's Michael Smyth becomes new AmCham president
Michael Smyth has become the new president of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Slovakia, the SITA newswire wrote on June 17. He replaces Robert Šimončič, who resigned from the post after accepting an offer to serve as the director general of the Slovak Investment and Trade Development Agency (SARIO).

Spending on advertising in Slovakia dropped by 35% in 2009
Spending on advertising in Slovakia totalled €1.1 billion in 2009, according to an analysis by the TNS SK agency reported by the SITA newswire. In comparison with 2008, when advertising spending amounted to €1.7 billion, the figure for 2009 represented a drop of 35.3 percent.
Harmonised inflation rate unchanged in May at 0.7%
Inflation in Slovakia measured by EU methodology stood at 0.7 percent year-on-year in May, the same figure as in April, the Slovak Statistics Office reported on Wednesday, June 16. Over the last 12 months, inflation has averaged 0.3 percent, the TASR newswire wrote.

Central bank: Slovak economy will grow by 3.7 percent in 2010
Slovakia’s central bank, the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS), has expressed increased optimism about the country’s prospects for economic recovery this year. In its medium-term prognosis presented on Tuesday, June 15, the NBS predicted growth of 3.7 percent in 2009, up from the 3.2 percent forecast three months ago. He believes Slovakia’s centre-right parties can form a coalition that can stick together but that they will have to work hard for such cohesion. Haughton came to Slovakia a week before the June 12 election after visiting the Czech Republic where he witnessed the election victory of the rightist parties there and he saw a similar election result unfold in Slovakia just a couple of weeks later.
World Cup 2010: Slovakia's first match ends in a tie
SLOVAK team's World Cup premiere against New Zealand ended in a tie, 1:1. Slovakia's Róbert Vittek scored first in the 50th minute of the match and Slovaks rejoiced until almost the end of the match.
